Piles in pregnancy!

I am suffering terribly from piles. I've had them badly since my first pregnancy and they're even worse now in my second. The GP said it's fine to carry on using Scheriproct (which has steroids in) but when I had previously Googled it I found legitimate sources saying animal studies showed it causes cleft palates and growth restriction. I know there's no guarantee it's the same for humans but there's obviously a risk and when I asked a pharmacist seemed surprised the GP hadn't discussed the risks with me. I have also now found that the cream they prescribed in my last pregnancy had steroids in and my baby was actually low birthweight. Probably a complete coincidence but am now really paranoid. Part of me thinks well I obviously can't use it if any risk, the other thinks how can I put up with this pain..It's bad enough using the stuff let alone without! Any opinions or experiences of this, medical minded people or fellow pile sufferers?!

Anyone?? Please???? Have now also found out you shouldn't even use them for more than seven days, according to the pharmacist who did my prescription today, and yet the GP has put them on repeat without even mentioning that!

I've had to take steroids all the way through my pregnancy due to a pre existing condition, and my baby is measuring absolutely spot on where she should be for birth weight.
Check with your GP, but if they're happy I wouldn't worry.
I have also started suffering with piles at 39 weeks, agony. I had an operation at 17 weeks and had to take cocodamol which causes constipation... Hence straining and now pain. I feel your pain!!! I currently only using cream xxx

Thanks first, it's reassuring to know there is someone else out there using something with steroids in pregnancy. Oh I hope your piles aren't too bad. Most cases seem to go away after pregnancy but unfortunately mine didn't! X

I was told to avoid the steroid crea min the first trimestre and use Anusol (you can buy over the counter) instead. It helped immensely.

I've also had a general anaesthetic and 5 locals! (Had to have a corneal transplant after a contact lens introduced an infection into my eye that destroyed it) Try not to worry too much - ultimately a doctor will never give you something if they think it will cause damage to the baby without discussing it with you.
I suspect mine are not going to go away, but I will talk to doc afterwards. Bet they will get worse after pushing!! xxx

I had bad piles two weeks ago and went to Boots and spoke to the pharmacist there. I bought the boots own cream (blue box) and applied regularly (and liberally!) and three days later all gone. I was shocked! Never had them before, and imagined they would be there til after the birth but I was proved wrong.

Would highly recommend.

Thanks Think and Citizen, I've tried Anusol, Boots and all the other ones.. they are all less hardcore than the one I've got and don't work at all Sad

Thanks First, I guess it's about risk v benefits and I honestly can't sleep if I don't use it, they're that bad. I'm more worried now though cos of finding out people are only supposed to use them for max seven days and it's been months already!

Gosh it sounds like you've had a lot to deal with. Hope the newborn snuggles help compensate for it all Grin

I've had awful eczema (only get it when pregnant) and have had to use steroid cream to keep me sane. I've used it all over- wouldn't worry about a tiddly bit on the bum hole! Piles are awful, hope they get better soon

Thanks Little that puts it into perspective a bit. I really hope you're not suffering too much, that doesn't sound nice at all x
