Hi there girls, I have had a really horrible cold, which has now turned into a constant cough. I think it's the worst cough I have ever had, hacking and honking like a donkey. I literally cannot get any sleep, and I have had two paracetamol, and lots of honey and lemon, but as I can't take anything, (I am 5+2) I am feeling at the end of my tether. Do any of you have a ny brilliant ideas to help? Thanks in advance xx

I think you can have simple linctus. I'm never really convinced caught medicine works though. Hot drinks and paracetamol probably the most use.

Thanks for that, I'm not convinced cough medicine works either, I'm sure it's just a pacifier. Never mind, will just have to sit up all night, trying not to wake ds and dh!

Hot, real brand name sugary Ribenna is the best non prescription cough medicine there is and believe me I've tried them all.

Heavy smoking DDad and the sort of post viral cough every time I got a cold, that they now give out blue inhalers for.

Only the codine containing ones actually work and I'm not sure they can be taken when PG.

sucking an ice cube is meant to stop a cough - never tried it but worth a go

Swifey · 28/09/2014 23:23

Thank you both! Don't have any ribena, but I do have homemade blackcurrant, blackberry and gooseberry cordial, I will try that, maybe with some ice in it! :-)

Lots of the cough sweets, like Lockets and Halls should be fine

ElephantsNeverForgive · 28/09/2014 23:28

Cordial might well work if it's good and sweet.

I always find hot drinks better than cold, but I'm a tea or coffee person.

Suck on some chocolate, let it melt in your mouth and suck slowly. I find galaxy or dairy milk best. It coats your throat a bit and helps stop coughing

Can you use Vicks? If you can, rub it into the soles of your feet and put a pair of socks on. It really works ... I know a few friends who swear by it, and it's saved my sanity too.

ClaimedByMe · 28/09/2014 23:30

Vicks on the feet I've heard stops a cough, never tried it myself but many friends have.

I'm 36 weeks and got last week the cold! What really helped me is a cup of hot raspberry jam with honey tea! Nothing helped but when my told me to drink it, I noticed that my nose was more clear, headache went away and I didn't cough as much anymore.

And you can drink it as much as you want! And won't hurt the baby

Get well!
