So last night I wiped and there it was a big stringy gooey substance with blood in i have never had a baby so I was like whoa what's this- spoke to a freind who's had 5 kids and she said it was a show- left it an hour and kept checking in the toilet and it was still coming out and still with blood- went to assessment unit as advised by midwife and was there 5 hours waiting for a dr to see me at 3.30an he turns up and he checked my cervix which was apparently closed- to my horror the spectrum was covered in mucus and blood but he sends me home with not much explanation and said she's still breech keep an eye on things you can go now- it all felt very rushed and not explained I'm so worried and I am not happy with this advice please help x

hi,

sorry you didn't have a good experience with the assessment unit- they are supposed to reassure you and put your mind at rest but sometimes they can rush it all. if you're still worried call them or see your doctor or another midwife.

if your plug is still coming away then call back and explain that you're worried.

with your plug it can come out early but it isn't any indication that you are about to go into labour as they can come back and you could have another show closer to your due date. what you need to do is rest (when I lost mine the midwife suggested a few days rest and on my midwife check a good few weeks my plug was firmly back in place) and try to relax which isn't easy I know!

just watch out for the labour signs and as soon as you feel any contractions or your waters go then call the labour ward ASAP.

I hope that helps.

wishing you all the best! x

At this stage as far as im aware you can lose the plug but it can "regrow" so to speak (though please someone correct me if im wrong) If your cervix is closed and you are not in pain id say relax rest when you can but keep going as normal too and you will probably be on here at 41+6 bemoaning an induction and wondering why an earth this baby is so flaming comfy where it is ;)

Losing the plug can happen weeks before labour, a show along with it usually indicates effacement or dilation (breaking capillaries as you stretch). A show (not just a plug) can be a sign of labour starting soon, BUT your practitioner has checked and your cervix is closed so the blood must be unrelated to dilation this time. If you have other signs or it continues, or even if you are worried, call your midwife or day assessment unit. They can check again and reassure you. The plug does regenerate as a pp said so dont worry too much about that.
