Bleeding at 33 weeks

I started bleeding tonight firstly quite alot of bright red fresh blood then when I got to hospital it had turned more brown. They've done an speculum exam and she could only see old blood. Baby moving and fine at the moment. My placenta is anterior so they are keeping me in, as they don't no reason for bleed. Anyone else experienced anything similar? X

I had placenta praevia with both DC2 and then DC3 but knew this before bleeds at 33 weeks with DC2 (went on to be born 8lb 11oz at 37+4 by CS), and with DC3 at 24 weeks, 26 weeks, 3 times at 31 weeks, (went on to be born 5lb 13oz at 36+1 by EMCS)

Thanks for sharing did they ask you to stay in at all? Doctor has said she wants me to stay tonight but I don't think it's nesscesery as bleeding has stopped mostly just very small amount of brown blood when wiping x

They really should be getting you a scan to check for placenta praevia, preferably in the next few days. Have they mentioned organising this?

No I'm booked in for a scan at 36 weeks to check if placenta has moved that's not till the 24/09. Ill ask them if I should have one before that. Thanks

Poor you - but try not to worry. I had this with my first baby - lots of bright red blood one morning, out of the blue, at 36 weeks. Stopped just as suddenly, bit of brown blood for a while, then nothing. I went to hospital to get it checked out, was examined and scanned etc., but all seemed ok - like you, I was kept in overnight for observation. I did have her a couple of weeks later though, so prepare yourself for a potential early arrival! Good luck x

Was the scan already booked because your placenta appeared low at your 20 week scan? Or have they booked it because of your bleed? Either way, because you have had a bleed I think you should be having the scan a bit sooner. We like to check women with symptomatic (bleeding) placenta praevia at 32-34 weeks.

If they cannot move the scan forwards do not panic, but if you did happen to go into labour before you've had the scan (unlikely) make sure midwives/ docs are fully aware of situation. Obviously they should see it all in your notes but it never does any harm to state the obvious as things can and do get overlooked.

It was already booked, I will ask them before I leave. Jeezeima ... Thanks for sharing that's made me feel a bit better hoping this is a one off I'm getting very little brown blood when wiping now xx

Yes ask them if they can move scan forward a couple of weeks but as bleeding has stopped fairly quickly they may be happy to leave appointment as it is. Is worth checking though.
