Twins 13wk - prescribed aspirin?

Hiya,

I'm 13 weeks along with twins. Everything going fairly normal, except from the horrendous morning sickness which has knocked me for six!

Had my 12 week scan last week and the consultant prescribed low dose aspirin to take from now onwards.

He didn't tell me why, but I assume to avoid a blood clot? I'm not over weight and trying to keep active, my blood pressure is normal if not a little low.

So I'm a bit worried about taking it if I don't need to. Has anyone else with twins been prescribed this so early on?

It may well be to reduce the risk of pre eclampsia.

Blood pressure natural lowers in early pregnancy that is not indication that it will stay low/ normal.

so you think its a pre-emptive kind of thing? just incase?

I'm 27wks with twins and was perscribed asprin from 16wks. I don't really know why either. I keep forgetting to ask the MW!

Google NICE guidelines on asprin in pregnancy. It is to prevent preeclampsia and or blood clots, in people deemed to be at high risk of it (either through having one or more high risk factors or two or more low risk factors - the guidelines clrarly detail these).

Hi, I'm type 1 diabetic and 13 weeks and have just been prescribed 75mg of aspirin a day as well, but they did explain why. It is to reduce the chance of pre-eclampsia, because diabetics are more likely to get it, they told me it can reduce the chance of me getting it by 25% and can also delay it happening if it's going to. I don't know about twins, but if the chance of pre-eclampsia is raised this may be why they've given it to you?

Apparently it's not actually licences for this use, but that's because it's not worth them spending the money getting it licences for this particular purpose as it has so many uses, a LOT of places use it for this :)

I wasn't prescribed any asprin during any of my twin pregnancies. Not that I could take them anyway due to anaemia. I'd ask the MW next time you go; just so you know. Good luck :)

Aspirin is really common to prevent miscarriage between conception and 12 weeks, lots of ladies having fertility treatment have it to improve their chance of conceiving and staying pregnant, but they stop at 12 weeks. I'm preggers with twins too (14+4), I was on Clexane injections upto 12 weeks which is the next step up from Asprin, not taken them for the last 2&1/2 weeks. I wonder if they will start me on Asprin at my next visit?

Don't worry about its effects, it's tried and tested and a miracle drug to many women ( my friend had recurrent miscarriages until she was prescribed Asprin, then had two healthy pregnancies one after another).

It's also used to benefit the placenta - could well be that too for twins?

I wasn't prescribed asprin during my pregnancy, it wasn't ever mentioned as a possibility, I'd ask your mw to explain.

Familyfortunes I'm confused, why would you need to take it to make sure the blood flows freely between them if you're having dcda??

Yes I think it is a case of aspirin won't do any harm but may have benefits.

I'm having twins and was asked -not prescribed - by several of the consultants at my hospital to start taking 75mg daily and to stay on it for rest of pregnancy. It is to help prevent pre-eclampsia / manage blood pressure. Multiple pregnancy puts you at higher risk for this. It came up at my first twin specialist appointment at 16 weeks, but I think they would have put me on it from 12 if they'd realised I wasn't taking it. My bp is normal too.

Hope the sickness passes soon. Mine cleared up at about 13/14 weeks.
