Worried. Got to see consultant after 12 week scan.

I had my 12 week scan on Tuesday and this morning have received a letter asking me to attend an appointment with a consultant on 25th September, it doesn't say why but I'm presuming it's because of my blood results.

I opted for the downs screening and the NT measurement was well within normal at 1.9mm but I know it's only an indicator.

I wondered if anyone else had this happen and what was the outcome? Could it be anything else? I'm 39 so know my risk is higher anyway.

Unlikely this consultant appointment has anything to do with downs screening, if you had bad blood/screening results, you would be told straight away. Consultant appointments usually happen at around 16/17 and if there are any risk factors, I went because I have hypothyroidism. It was very routine. Hth

I would have thought it was probably a standard appointment just because you are considered high risk. If it was anything serious realted to blood results or your NT measurement you would have had heard something by now, not have to wait a month for an appointment. xxx

I had had a loop biopsy so had to see the consultant, although didn't know why at the time. I'm sure it's nothing to worry about or they would want to see you sooner.

It could be something they picked up in YOUR bloods if your screeninG was OK. Things like anemia or raised thyroid.
You may well get some medication and more scans but it really is quite common.

If there's a downs syndrome risk they tend to contact you directly not wait for a future appointment.

When I was having my son I had my scan and a few days later got a letter for an appointment with a consultant. I was so worried I rang the maternity unit, but the referral was nothing to do with my scan, it was due to a few minor health issues which had been diagnosed previously.

Sounds like you are having a consultant lead delivery, rather than midwife lead. Is there a reason you are higher risk? I've been consultant lead for all my births. Most common reasons would be high BMI, age, family history, medical history, multiple birth etc.

I had consultant led care for ds2 because of a bad tear when ss1 was born. I saw him twice (12 weeks and 36 weeks).

A friend had consulant led care because she has her first child at 40.

Could it be something simple like this?

As waffle said it sounds more like your going to be consultant led because of something like medical history, bmi, age, family history.

If it was something from the scan, they would have seen you straight after the scan and if it was bloods theyd normally phone or see you as soon as they came back.

I had my consultant booking appointment at 16 weeks, it just sounds like that. Mine was very routine - the usual blood pressure, bloods etc that the community midwife did at booking were repeated (by a midwife) and then I spent about 10 minutes having a chat with a doctor (not the consultant, who was on holiday) about care for the rest of my pregnancy (6 weekly consultant clinic appointments in addition to the community midwife, and a few extra scans, in my case). I'm consultant led because of previous c-sections and pre-eclampsia, but there are all manner of reasons why you might be.

Your community midwife may be able to clarify, if you call?

Waffle consultant led doesn't mean consultant delivered. I've seen a consultant fortnightly for the whole time, because of the nature of my condition my birth is booked into a MLU. It depends on the condition.

I rang the hospital and spoke to a midwife, she can't access my notes until Monday but like some have said if it was to do with the Downs test they would have phoned me to book in with a doctor first and it would be much sooner.

My first labour was extremely long, 30 hours back to back and ended with an episiotomy and ventouse but I had no tear or bleeding and my daughter was fine. She was 6lbs 15 which my midwife said may cause them to do growth scans this time but todays midwife said it would be mentioned on this babys growth chart where it has previous babys details so she didn't think it was that.
I'm unsure how much of the previous labours notes they read, throughout it the monitors that they put across your bump couldn't pick up my contractions and her heart rate was dropping before each contraction which the midwives claimed to have never seen before and said they usually drop during them.

Health wise I'm ok I think, I'm a bit overweight but only a stone, my bmi is 28 and I'm 39 but didn't think that was old enough to need to see a consultant.
I do feel much better now though as it sounds like it's probably something minor and very unlikely to be anything serious with the baby.

6lb + is well within the realms of 'normal' though? (I know because I had a whole growth scan malarky yesterday thanks to a concerned midwife who told me after a FH measurement my baby felt like a 31 weeker - which I knew to be untrue... yesterday they estimated 6lb and they shrugged and said 'on the small side but well within average percentiles' and sent me on my way).

It seems to be really weird that although on every chart etc 6lb is fine, some MW and online sources act like it's tiny (causing anxiety) when the majority don't.

My last scan (yesterday) put mine at about the 45th percentile - smaller than average but no one was bothered.

OP might it just be something like, at the time of your first labour, a MW scrawled "unexplained HR dips, very unusual" or something on your notes?

Or maybe they just have everyone whose bmi is over 25 in, or something?

I am consultant led but that is because I have nasty kidney issues so it makes sense.

As you had an assisted delivery last time, they'll very likely want to chat about any long term effects -continence/pelvic floor issues to determine if you should be heading toward another vaginal delivery or not. My guess anyway.

It could very well be because of your age. I had my first baby at 37 and was automatically referred to a consultant. It was a 5 minute job, and I didn't see her again until I was having my second one 5 years later, but I did find it quite reassuring to have met her, just in case.

Don't be worried. My bloods came back as 1 in 13 chance of chromosome issues with my DD - I was told in a phone call just 2 days after blood was taken. You would've been contacted urgently if it were a chromosomal issue.

This time round, I had an early appt with consultant (16 weeks ish) just for a general health check.

Best thing to do us give the hospital a ring and find out what the appt is for. I'm sure it will ease your worry.

I had my dating scan on the 25th march said all was well with baby but then received a message from midwife 27th March to tell me she has booked me in for another scan today 28th March but I have no answers to why I need to go for this as she will not answer her phone and midwifery unot have failed to call me back last night. Is any one able to shed some light on this for me as I am very worried iv never heard of this happening before. Thanks x
