Could I be pregnant?

I am late by 2 days, and have had unprotected sex in the last month. Its not a problem if I am pregnant, but I am getting cramps in my pelvis as I would normally if I were to come on. I have calculated my period dates, and I know I should have started my period by now. I don't want to stress myself because this could delay my period further, should I not be pregnant. I have been stressed alot over the last week, so I feel along with the symptons I could be due on. But I am unsure if they could be signs of pregnancy perhaps? I have very heavy boobs, my stomach is bloated and I am getting cramps. I was ratty last week, so have all the signs for a due period, but are they also signs of the early stages of pregnancy? Also how many days after a late/due period should you take a test?

Sorry for the long winded post, I am quite concerned, I am on my own [with the OH, but no friends or family]in a foreign non English speaking country, and could do with not being pregnant here to be honest....

well....if you're already late the only way to find out is to do a test, isn't it?

no-one on MN will be able to give the answer I'm afraid....
although it would save us all a few quid if they could!!

lulumama · 21/09/2006 06:59

you can take a test the day your period would be due, some tests very sensitive and can work a couple of days before your period is due! try clearblue or first response. heavy boobs, cramping can be a sign of early pregnancy . do a test, then you should know where you are xx

Thanks for responding - it was more a case on asking for advise on the early signs of being preggers. I will wait until the weekend then buy a test. Thanks again

Stress could also be making you feel the way you do.

FaithL · 21/09/2006 13:33

am afraid all the signs of early pregnancy overlap a lot with those of overdue periods - big difference I found was feeling a lot more tired and needing to pee more! otherwise only sure fire way will be do take a test. Good luck

divastrop · 21/09/2006 20:20

im 15 weeks pg and i still feel like im about to get my period!
seriously, though, the only difference for me was that my boobs got a bit bigger, apart from that i had all the classic signs of pms.i bought a test for 99p and i got a positive result 2 days b4 i was due on(although i did about 4 more after that in case i'd looked at it wrong)
good luck x

Well, now I have really intense like 'period is due any minute' type of cramps. I have no idea where I can buy a pregnancy test from [I live in China], but I will hunt one out on Monday if I still have not had my period by then. I think the stress and worry over being pregnant could be holding my period back though. Thanks for all your replies, it makes me feel I'm not alone.

Also, I have to have a medical check next week which involves a chest x-ray. Should I mention I could be pregnant? If I am pregnant, and if there is no risk to the baby, then I would rather not tell the docs, as I need to have the checks done so I can move to another country.

Goodness M.A. - what a dilemma! Guess that means you might not be walking so much this week for pedometer club?

Seriously though - definitely tell the doctor you think you might be pregnant (maybe he/she could do a test for you, or tell you where/how to get one?). I know it's not the same thing, but when I was pregnant the dentist still did an x-ray and made me wear the lead apron, but they did a much less powerful one and used a lower blast of radiation - or whatever it is. Means that the xray isn't as clear/defined, but protects the baby.

If you are so stressed and anxious about the possibility (and I certainly understand why), it might help to do something physical (like go for long walks) to release some endorphins. I find when I'm upset that doing something physical goes some way toward counteracting the mental upset. Just thinking to myself that you might log a total of 200,000 steps next week or some other ludicrously high total.

Good luck, and let us know how you get on.

MuckyAnthea · 22/09/2006 07:26

Thanks Earlybird, your response it just what I needed to hear/read! I have been going to the gym and walking on the treadmill for an hour 4 times this week, does this count for the pedometer club?? : )

I have just been for a swim, so hopefully this will move things along. The thing is because I know I had unprotected sex I am concerned about my period, usually I know I will come on at some point at the end of the month - I never have a set date. Its only when I worked it out using an online period counter thingio, it said I should have been due on the 19th Sept, this is why I think I am late, but I actually am experienceing all the signs of a due period.

I was in a road accident a couple of months ago and hit my head pretty badly. When I got my head x-rayed, the docs used one of those lead apron things, so I think here it is a precaution they always use, he did not ask me if I was pregnant. The X-ray I need to have next week is to check my chest for TB. If I tell the docs I am pregnant it will delay our move to another country, and basically put our lives on hold for the next 12 months.

Sorry to ramble, thanks everyone for helping me out.

Hi MuckyAnthea, definately get a test the sooner the better for your peace of mind.
I was a day late when I bought my pg test and it came up positive, it was clearblue I bought which is really good.
Good luck

MuckyAnthea · 22/09/2006 08:01

Thanks redz, next week I think I will get the test, just give myself a few more days to see if anything happens. Thanks for responding : )

codwiggle · 22/09/2006 08:23

why?
get a test?

edie123 · 22/09/2006 09:01

Why would being pregnant delay your move for 12 months?

I think you should do a test sooner as there is no point in stressing yourself over nothing in the instance that it is negative.

MuckyAnthea · 22/09/2006 09:02

codwiggle - because I live in a country where Pregnancy tests are not easily available. I am just asking for advice as I feel quite alone here and have no-one to get feedback from. Thats all. Shakes head back

Ignore Cod muckyanthea, she has a 'thing' about certain threads. HOpe you get the result you want.

MuckyAnthea · 22/09/2006 09:09

edie - its the x-ray thats the problem. If I can't have an x-ray then I cannot fulfill all the criteria needed to complete the visa application. They will ask to wait for the baby to be born before I can proceed with the visa. I said 12 months because of work committments etc.

cod- if you have a problem with certain threads why repy to them?- move along and read another thread which you are interested in. She was only wanting advice- it must be nice to be as perfect as you!

edie123 · 22/09/2006 09:32

Oh right, erm, well they should still be able to do an x ray otherwise that would be an awful situ to be in! Pop to your doc to see if he will do a test, it could quite easily be all this worrying that is delaying your period. When I was pg all that was different from period stuff was going to the loo in the middle of the night! HTH! xx

MuckyAnthea · 22/09/2006 09:37

Thanks Edie : )

LteMadrid · 22/09/2006 12:07

MuckyAnthea - when they give you the xray on Monday just ask for a lead blanket which will be put over your stomach - just say it's a 'precaution' as you're trying to get pregnant... (it's not too unusual a precaution). Also, I presume as expats you have access to a GP who could do a quick dipstick test for you and since is bound by patient confidentiality if it's positive can't say anything to anyone to scupper your move.
One interesting thing is - stress can delay ovulation but once that has occurred then your body follows it's usual rhythm. However, one sure fire way I've always found is to go buy the most expensive pregnancy test around as you can be certain if you're not pregnant you'll come on as soon as it's been used!
Good luck and hope you get your move to a different land (as another expat I know what it's like to get 'stuck').

MuckyAnthea · 22/09/2006 14:53

Ltemadrid - thanks for your understanding, I am so pleased you can relate to my problem. I will most definately ask for the lead apron as a precaution with the Xray, and will ask for the pregnancy test too. Thanks for your advice, I was worried they would include the test with the xray and health check results, and if positive the results would delay our move. We have lived in China for 4 years, and I am desperate to move on to another country so we can settle down, buy a house and have children. I feel we have screwed things up big time, but we shall wait and see.
Thanks again for responding, it means alot : )

Make sure you don't sign anything that says your employers (or whoever this is that is asking for the health checks) have access to all your medical records. Explain to the GP that yu want the test for personal reasons, it is not part of the 'screening' and specifically that you wish it to be confidential.
(I would be paranoid about it!)

Also - start a thread like 'are x rays safe in earlt pg' - some of the medical people will respond, whereas they will miss it under this thread title It may be that the standard use of the lead apsron will be fine, whether or not you are pg.
