Does everyone have a GTT?

Hi

I am 29 weeks and have my 28 week MW appointment tomorrow. I've heard people mention a GTT test, is this something everyone has? I've heard that you're supposed to have it before 29 weeks but mw hasn't mentioned it to me at my previous appt. But my appts have been a bit all over the place so not sure if I was supposed to book it in and have missed it.

No it isn't, it will be given to women with risk factors associated with gestational diabetes which include....

Being overweight (high BMI)

Family history of diabetes and/or gestational diabetes

Fundal height measuring large for dates and subsequent growth scan showing a big baby and/or high volume of fluid around baby.

Ethnic origin - asian and african people tend to have higher risk

It was never mentioned when I was pg with dd but now I am pg again I have been booked one, because this time I am over 35 and so now more at risk of GD. I asked the mw if I really needed it (feeling well, no GD symptoms) and she said so long as I get in touch between regular mw appointments if I get any symptoms, it is my choice if I want to cancel so I will (I hate all medical appointments so just prefer to only go to those which are likely to improve my/baby's health).

So if you are under 36 that might be why you haven't been offered, but different areas may do it differently.

My ante natal gives everyone a basic non fasting test at 28 weeks, same time as their iron test. They then do proper full tests based on those results.

No, it isn't standard in low risk pregnancies.

Yes my area also do non fasting glucose tests too. Never had one with ds 12yrs ago.

Funchum I'm 35 but have no other risk factors and they are not giving me one. If you are otherwise low risk you will hopefully be okay!

It was standard where I lived for all pregnancies when I had DD in 2011 - everyone in my NCT class had it, some 'older' mums but plenty of low risk, sub-30s too.

funchum, I've had GD in both my pregnancies and never had any symptoms. I have the GTT due to family history but otherwise no other risk factors. In other countries it's (or other GD screening) offered to all pregnant women.

Tarka thanks for pointing out GD can be symptom free! My MW explained what to look out for but sounds like that may not work! Will do some more research...

It's not standard where I am but I have had one of my doctors recommend it. I'm trying to avoid it though because I have (very mild) hg and I know it will make me feel ill.

Last time they tested blood glucose it was in the middle of the healthy range and my baby is ok size wise (1.6kg at 31 weeks) so I got a second opinion and they said I didn't need it and it would have been flagged up because my dgm was diabetic, I'm an older mum and was slightly over the healthy bmi range when I got pg. (26.5) I've gained 10kg in my pregnancy and they don't seem to think that's too bad.

I had one because of my age, I'm 36. I have no risk factors but still had to have it, it's just my hospitals way of doing things.
