Am 20 weeks pregnant with first baby and for last week or so am having increasing pain in my lower left hand ribs. Am sure it is just things stretching and moving - but has anyone got any ideas on how to deal with pain - feels like constant very bad stitch

I found that doing a pregnancy yoga class really helped with this kind of pain -- I think all the stretching opened up a bit more space beneath my ribs for the baby.

thanks - am due to start yoga classes in about a month so will try and do some stretching on my own to help in meantime.....

Me too and yes yoga is working. Cat and down dog are particularly good for me (for upper back as well as ribs).

Hi FaithL. I feel for you because i am 33weeks pregnant and have had the rib pain for about 6 weeks (thats not to say you will) but i was told it is where the baby lies and uses the space in your ribs as he/she grows. I was told to put something cold on the painful bit because babies dont like the cold and tend to move away, also try getting on all fours to move the babies position - oh and i hope the yoga helps x

Thanks for advice guys - sounds like yoga is the way to go. That and a bag of cold peas!

That's interesting to read someone else has experienced this type of discomfort - it seemed to happen on and off during the second half of my pregnancy and had never experienced pain there before. Even after the birth in the following moinths I would still have experienced this same pain which I thought was strange - I suppose it is to do with stretching of certain muscles or ligaments. Has anyone ever had really sore hip bones when lying on your side in bed - I experienced a lot of discomfort during my final weeks of pregnancy and felt like princess and the pea - I had to sleep on 5 layers of duvet on top of my mattress and about 6 inches higher on the bed beside my husband!!

i had severe rib pain in last week of dd pregnancy.i was coughing one morning (sort of being sick too) and i felt something give in my ribs.i could not breath or move it was like a really bad stitch.my dh rushed me to hosp and they said that the babys feet were in my rib cage and they had split the intercostal muscles.i had to have a section as i knew i could not cope with a natural birth as my movements were so restricted. When she was born her foot was slightly twisted but was later put right through constant massage. If you would have told me this could happen i would not have never believed it!

Mum18772 - i know what you mean about the hips, im 34 weeks and for about the last 4 weeks i have had so much pain in whichever hip im lying on and i turn over it the other one starts. Also when i get up i walk like John Wayne whos lost his horse for about an hour until it eases off, oh the joys of pg!!

Chocolatepeanut - that sounds awful glad your lo was ok, i heard that sometimes your rib can pop out too if the baby puts enough pressure on it, now that worrying!!
