Hi everyone, I've just found out I'm pregnant and going to be a single mum. I am working full time and am worrying about how I am going to cope financially on maternity leave as getting the SMP will only just cover my mortgage. Can anyone advise thanks!

I am not in your position but wanted to say that this is a magical time for you and to relax and enjoy being pregnant

Firstly congrats!

Most employers have an occupational maternity leave pay system in addition to the SMP. You need to check with your employer

Yes, you might be entitled to working families tax credit - give them a call, the number is in your phone book. You should get quite a few benefits really, including childcare tax credit for if you return to work and have to put your baby into childcare.

Someone else will have better advice soon I'm sure. Good luck and congrats!

check your mortgage provider you may be able to take a payment break during maternity leave
