Feeling guilty

My DHs gran has knitted us some lovely stuff for baby. A little cardigan, bootees, hat and a lovely blanket. It's a lovely gesture and it is beautiful but.......my gran-in-law is an insanely heavy smoker. 40 a day habit.

I opened the parcel from her and nearly threw up at the smell of smoke coming off it. I have had to double wrap it and put it in another room. I feel so guilty as it is a beautiful gift but genuinely don't know if I will get the smell out enough to use them on 'squidge'.

As a side - any advice on getting smells out of delicate fabric using baby friendly chemicals.

Hi, we had exactly the same issue and even after several washes and days outside they still smelt.
I never used them.

Can you soak them, making sure you change the water a few times? Then wash then hang outside, even if raining?

No idea if that would work. I hate smoke smell.

This may sound bizarre but I collect vintage clothes so have lotsvof experience in de stinking delicate clothing.

  1. Soak overnight in oxy powder and Luke warm water. You may want to do this twice. Then wash on a hand wash cycle (or hand wash) with woolite or non bio and another scoop of oxy. Do a cool extra rinse. Dry flat.
  2. The weird options! Put vodka is a spray bottle and spritz the clothing and let dry before washing. Don't worry you'll wash out the alcohol!

These methods don't hurt 50 year old wools and linens so you should be OK with modern clothing. The smoke genuinely comes out (you can sometimes!es SEE it with method 1) so they're properly clean, not just deoderised.
