Scan alone tomorrow

12 week scan at 8:45 tomorrow. DC3. For reasons of complicated childcare failure DH now has to stay home with DC1&2 rather than come. I'm relatively relaxed about these things but starting to panic now. I had two MCs in between DD and DS so only have a fifty percent success rate by 12 weeks historically. Please wish me luck, don't want to discover another MC alone!

Good luck sweet. Could you not take the children with you? Or are they too little?

Can he not bring them and at least be in the waiting room? When I was there for a growth scan a couple of weeks ago, there was a woman there with two other adult friends and NINE children amongst them. More than half of that lot went in to the scan too!

I took DS, then 4 to a scan. It was fine.

With OPS nerves about MC, taking the kids might increase anxiety especially if they are old enough to pick up on something sad happening. Also it can be exceptionally painful to come out of the scan room to kids running (or quietly staring/asking why you're crying) - some hospitals don't encourage them I guess for that reason.

Having said that even with the history described, thankfully the risk is no higher than anyone else at 12 weeks ... less than 5%. So most likely all will be well.

Thanks all. I took DD then 18 months to the scan that revealed my first miscarriage, and it didn't go well- we didn't realise she wouldn't be allowed in the room so DH carried her in and then was sent to wait outside so DD screamed "Mummmmeeeeeee!" in the corridor throughout my scan, then has to deal with me being upset. Not an experience I'd like to repeat, and DS is now a similar age to what she was then (16 mo). Also they don't know I'm PG yet DD is now 4 so would want to know why we're going to the hospital.

Ah I feel for you. I had to go to one on my own for the same reasons. I'll come with you if you want! Maybe ask one of the receptionists to go in with you if you feel better just having anyone there?

Good luck. I had to go to my 12 week scan with this baby (and an earlier post-bleeding scan) alone too, as DH was working away. I've had miscarriages in the past so get really nervous about scans now, but in an odd sort of way I find them easier to handle on my own, with no one fussing over me and nobody else to think about. Do make sure that the sonographer knows that you have had a miscarriage before - it really helped me to be told straight away "Ok, there's your baby and there's the heartbeat", rather than waiting in silence while they had a good look around. I'm with you re no children at scans, I just wouldn't do it under any circumstances.

I've been to three scans so far alone (the 12 weeks knew, a private early one, one for bleeding) and have two more lined up (20 week one and another as I'm part of a research project)! My partner is serving abroad in the forces. I thought I'd be fine alone, and I was in general, but I did find it hard to remember everything I was told. Could you take a friend or relative?

Can't you take a friend or your mum or something? I went with my friend - it was an amazing experience seeing his tiny feet etc. She was the first to have a baby of all my friends (her DH had to work & couldn't get time off so I stepped in last min).

SomeSunnySunday I must have looked nervous when we went in to my first scan as she straight away went to "there's the heartbeat you have a baby -you haven't imagined it" I was very relieved as this was exactly what I had feared.

Thanks all for your good wishes and wise words.

My parents are away and I've only told two friends so far, neither of whom are local (I'm delaying telling local friends til further down the line as i work with many but also a friend had a stillbirth recently and i know every pregnancy announcment is extremely hard for her).

In all likelihood all will be well but I will definitely stress my miscarriage history as I walk in, in the hope of speedy reassurance! I just hope it's not the same insensitive sonographer who previously broke news of a miscarriage to me very clumsily.

I'll let you know how I get on!

Baby seems fine! Cried with relief at the heartbeat. Waiting in the clinic now for all the further palaver. Thanks for all your good wishes x

Grin as it's a bit late to say good luck.

DH was in Europe for DD2s 20week scan and I took DD1(2.5) without thinking about it.

Never realised it wasn't the done thing until I joined MN.

Sonographer looked mildly fed up, but she had a feed up sort of face, so I've no idea if she did/didn't approve of DD.
