I had PUPP with dd1 right at the end of pregnancy up until she was 2 weeks old, didn't have it with dd2, and had it very badly with dd3 from 15 weeks onwards, and was treated with antihistamines and steroid tablets and creams. I am pregnant again (just over 13 weeks) and for the last 2 weeks have had very itchy rash over my chest and underside of 'norks' to use an MN phrase!

I would really like to avoid steroids again as I gained a lot of weight taking them for so long last year.

Any advice, tips or commiseration, it's miserable!!

Oh babe i had it and i really feel for you, i'm 40 weeks pregnant now (overdue infact!) but had it for about 2 months in mid pregnacy and it was a nightmare, the steroid cream the doctor gave me made it worse i had it all over my stomach, chest, arms and above my knees; i spent so much money on creams and potions but the only things that worked for me in the end (and they did work after a while) were euricin cream which cost about £12 from boots and really helped, aveeno oatmeal bath soothed it for a little while and dandylion root extract from a herbal store. Not sure if any of this helps but you can e-mail me [email protected] if you have any more questions, could talk for ages on this subject cos i spent so many nights itching like mad and surfing the net for cures to stop myself going crazy!!!!! xx

People just don't get how a rash can make you feel so-o-o bad, do they?? I spent most of my last pregnancy in an oatmeal bath. I had it all over except for face, palms of hands and soles of feet. Truly a horrible thing to get. I'm going to investigate the dandy lion root extract.

Thanks for replying, I have never spoken to anyone who' s had it before and begining to think I am a bit of a freak!!

I developed it after delivery. The midwives were worried I was contagious and took me down to dermatology. I was given Elocon and Aqueous Cream with menthol in. The aqueous stung/had a burning sensation at first but then just felt beautifully cool.
Commiserations - I only had it for three weeks and it just made everything much more difficult.

Nome, when I first had it the GP told me it was scabies so had to treat myself. dh, dd1 &2. Anyone who has seen scabies and PUPP will know they are not at all similar!! You are right about how it makes everything so much more difficult. I am aware of it all the time.

I had this for 3 weeks at the end of my last pregnancy, and it was a nightmare. The only thing which really worked was piriton tablets (which you usually take for bee stings) but you might have a problem getting these prescribed. My GP refused to prescribe them and I had to get myself admitted to hospital to get them prescribed by the hospital doctors. There is no positive proof that they do not affect the unborn baby, which is why most GPs want to play safe, but piriton has been around for about 50 years I think and equally there is no research saying it is harmful to the baby - certainly did no harm in my case.

I was told to take piriton for a pregnancy induced rash by my GP (PUPP was never mentioned though, they seemed to be more worried about OC). I was about 36 weeks at the time though so it may not be as big an issue at the end? Sorry I haven't got any more useful advice.

Well I've learnt something new. Maybe it's quite rare? My kids get excema so I know a bit about the horror of skin probs so much sympathy and best wishes for successful treatment!

I am 6 weeks pregnant today and I went to my dermatologists office yesterday and was diagnosed with PUPP. I am still not convinced that it is PUPP that I have because when I look at all the pictures on line I do not look that bad yet.. but it sure itches and it started on my arms, and are now on my legs and itch most around my knee on the left side. They took a biopsy so we will know for sure in a week if it is PUPP.
