I am 34 weeks pregnant...and last week...a small cyst I have had on my back for years became infected and is now a 5cm x 5cm inflamed lump Sad .

I was referred to the hospital by my doctor...and after some deliberation, they decided not to drain the cyst as it was "too big" and I would need a general anaesthetic to cut it out. So I was sent off with antibiotics and told I could take paracetamol if I needed to.

I really can't describe the agony I am in. I am restricted to sleeping in a very awkward position due to the position of the cyst...and must wake up 10 times a night in pain.

I have been trying to avoid painkillers...but a few times during the past few nights...I have been taking what I thought was paracetamol out of the bathroom cabinet.

However...early this morning...I realised what I have actually been taking is ibuprofen Sad . I googled it and it appears really dangerous to take in the last trimester.

I feel like such an idiot...not checking what I was taking properly and am so worried that I might have harmed my baby.

I have a midwife appointmenf at 10 this morning so will tell her...but I honestly feel so awful in myself.

Has anybody else taken it late in pregnancy...and what were the effects ?

I wouldn't take Ibrofren. However with my first DS I had to pass a kidney stone and was in agony for weeks, I was prescribed codeine which helped - check with your doctor but as I far as I am aware it is ok to take if really needed be aware it can cause constipation so keep your fibre and water up

Try not to worry - just don't take any more. I'm sure a few doses will not have any effect. They have limited evidence on the effect of drugs in pregnancy, as obviously it would not be ethical to test. I suspect any evidence they do have is based on women who have taken a lot more than you.

I think it is only really bad if you take just before you are due as it stops a hole closing in the babies heart, but as you are only 34 weeks and only took it for one night, I am not a doctor but I am sure you will be fine. Tell your MW though like you planned.

My DH gave me two by mistake in 1st trimester and DS is fine afaik.

Hi,
The risk is that it can close the hole in babies heart that is needed when in the womb (it is actually used as a therapy to close the hole if still open and big if baby born prem).
I wouldn't think in small doses it would do much. I would have contacted mw/delivery suite when you found out who could have advised you and most probably reassured you x

Hello, the leaflet below details the possible effects of ibuprofen in the third trimester. You should definately speak to your midwife about this, she will advise you on whether further checks are needed.
