Perineal massage - doing it wrong?

Went to try this today but, apart from it being darned uncomfortable to reach (am 34 weeks), it really hurt. I know it is meant to be uncomfortable and have read the sites telling me how to do it, but can anyone share whether it hurts first time; is meant to hurt or am I doing it wrong?!

I tried it and it did hurt..Remember its not a "massage" but more of a way of streatching your "bits" to get them supple and ready for the birth.

I tried it myself (couldn't reach or see) and dh tried it (didn't seem right .). BTW its to help with the crowing of baby's head..this is also known as "the ring of fire" with this in mind this is apparently how it's meant to feel doing the "massage".

I gave up..!!

OK, thanks shhhh, I may try and give it another go later on. Perhaps try a different position and get a mirror (sorry if TMI!).....

Has anyone else got any experiences to share?

I've been doing it off and on for about 2 weeks now - I have 2 weeks to go! It is uncomfortable and hard to reach! I prop my knees against the wall and my back against the bed and squat to do it. This seems easier than any other position.
I find it easier to use one hand at a time too!
Bit footerry but it seems to do the job.

It is awkward and I keep 'forgetting' to do it. Sharp finger nails caused even more discomfort, but I found putting olive oil onto a cotton wall pad and massaging with that more comfortable.

Just to make you aware that you need to "pull/stretch" the inside bits iykwim. Not simply massage the outside area. If you want I have an email I can forward onto you with details of how to do it...

Keep going with it girls, I swear it was what kept me intact through my two beautiful dd's

I had a 2nd degree tear . Maybe I should have been more persistant..!!

Yes, it was the 'inside' bits that hurt!! Have got several links that describe it, thanks shhhh.

OK, will be persistent!!!
