First midwife appointment, what to expect?

I've got my first midwife appointment on Thursday and was wondering what to expect. I've already been told to do my height and weight beforehand and been given an info pack on screening and one on weight gain. I figured we would go through medical history etc but was there anything that someone didn't expect? Does anyone know how long roughly this appointment is? Thanks

Not much happens to be honest. She'll take you dates and do a bit of firm filling. In my area, they arrange a date with the hospital for a scan that they post out to you.

Mine took about an hour. They needed a pee sample which I didn't know before hand so if you have a sample pot they prefer one from your fmu.

They took a blood sample and the rest was filling in pregnancy notes! They took my height and weight etc. My partner came but if you know his family medical history I wouldn't say it's necessary

With both of mine, they took blood, dipped your wee for infections/glucose etc, go through you and your partner's medical history and take your BP.

If you're not taking your DP then ask him first about his medical history and anything relevant. Takes about an hour. They'll work out your dates. I got my scan appointment through the hospital, not the mw. They'll also tell you if you fall under a high risk category or not and how often they'll see you.

I got my scan date at this appointment so defo varies on where you are. They did my blood pressure as well forgot about that!

I've already got my scan which I wasn't expecting through the post I thought she would be the one to arrange it. May pop to the docs and get a sample pot just in case as I don't think I have anything suitable :)

How many weeks are you? I had my first app at what we thought was 6 weeks (actually only 4) and did the paper work, medical and family history, height and weight. Then she gave me some general advice. Got info leaflets etc and a pot to pee in for the next appointment.

Second appointment was at 8 (6) weeks when I had urine and blood tests done.

Also if you're friendly with DP's mum check if she had any complications at birth as they asked me as they can be passed on. Talk to your mum about the same.

Clairejessicamiller · 03/08/2014 14:24

I'm between 6 and 8 their counting me as 8 as standard protocol here is that count from your last period and this will only be changed at your scan. I think I'm 6 and I had a long cycle before the one I feel pregnant one and I had a negative test result either in the month but we will see :) thankfully my mum had great labours about 7 hours with me and 5 with my sister and only gas and air with both. Not sure about his so I will ask her thanks :)

When I had my first one, it took about 1hr. they did blood pressure, hight, weight, testd urine and took the relevant blood samples. They will also go through family history on both sides, so if you dont know his side, they find out or take him with you.

They will also go through general information like weight management for example and give you lots of leaflets about numerous different things. They will also send your details to your hospital to get you booked on for your 12 week scan

Had mine last week, they did a scan as well as what's mentioned above! I wasn't expecting it so a pleasant surprise!
