We live in different countries and I had planned to travel to his this weekend where I was to surprise with a private scan, and to tell him in person but due to health problems abd a hospital stay I've been unable to go.

I'm 15+5 and we're ready to start telling people, we're ready to share the joy with our families. My dad is always the first to be told in person (aside from our cunning 6yo ds Grin).

How can I tell him? I think doing it over the phone/skype seems do impersonal...

I told my parents over the phone. Wanted to tell them as soon as I knew and I'm in northern Scotland and they're in middle England.

Perhaps you could find a creative way to tell them over Skype. Get your DS involved with making a sign to hold up. I announced on Facebook with a picture of the oven with "bun in oven" -not sure if you could do something similar...
DS goes on Skype... Grandad: Where's your mum? DS: "Mum's been busy cooking.. she's got a bun in the oven just now." Then you appear and announce the news or ask if it should have blue or pink icing?
