Is there another way to get rid of a Urine infection other than Antibiotics?

Am 10weeks +3days.

Went to the docs with cramping etc wednesday and she tested my urine and said that I have an infection and prescribed me Amoxicillin.

Took one that night and two the next day with a six hour gap between. Then started to vomit. For the duration of my 10week pregnacy, previous to taking the Antibiotics, I didn't throw up. It has been less then 24hrs since the last Amoxicillin tablet taken and I do still feel rather nauseous. How long do you think it will take for the Antibiotic to be flushed out of my system?

Has anyone else experienced ms suddenly starting at 10+weeks?
How likely is it that it is the medication that is causing my sickness?
Is there anything else that I can do to get rid of the infection other then take the medication?

I know that not everyone is a medical expert but I would realy apreciate your experiences and thoughts.
TIA

I don't thinks there's anything you take to get rid of the infection. Your immune system will eventually fight of the infection but as you are pregnant I would say that you should go back to your GP and tell her the problem. She may prescribe you something else.

Time and lots of water. Cranberry juice can help too.

Go back to the GP now. Untreated cystitis can result in kidney damage. She needs to find you an alternative antibiotic.

Is it really that bad Janinlondon?!?! I did call yesterday to inform the doctor that I'm not taking the Antibiotic as I don't see what good it'll do if I'm bringing it back up anyway. I'm waiting for her call back today between 12and 3pm.

I always thought that there must be another way as there are many women out there that don't want to take antibiotic etc when pregnant. Was I wrong?

In the meantime do drink LOADS of cranberry juice. I had urine infection for about 2 weeks, 2 lots of antibiotics and in the end the only thing that got rid of it was drinking about 2/3 big cartons of cranberry juice a day - just glugging the stuff. Might be worth a try if you feel up to it and that doesn't make you feel sick too.

Yes, I think you should go back to the gp, I had cefalexin for my uti, didn't want to take antibiotics but if left infections can cause premature labour apparently, it's another reason why they're so hot on testing urine, according to the on-call midwife.I phoned the medicom as I was having braxtons and cramps with back ache (23 weeks), I'd been to the doctor the day before about the infection and he said only take the tablets of it doesn't improve with drinking lots of water, but mw said bladder irritates the uterus and to take them straight away. If there's no other cause for your vomiting (ie food poisoning) then I'd go back and get another prescription. Cranberry juice is good but a lot of the ones in the shops have loads of sugar in and that feeds the bacteria. Hope you feel better soon.

Ok just had a phone call from the doctor. She's written out another prescription for me and has told me to hold off taking them if pos until monday when I will get my culture results. (whatever they are?!) Obviously if the cystitus feeling is still there or I get anymore cramping inbetween times I have to start the new prescription.

Thank you all for your responses. Cranbry juice and water for me until monday then.

bubblez just wanted to say not to try to do without medication whilst PG. I suffer from UTIs and normally try to go down the natural route (Cranberry, Water cutting out sugar / salt, fruit) this can take a v long time, and if it spreads to your kidneys can be really difficult to treat. When you are PG any infection is very draining on the immune system and esp UTI can lead to other complications.
Persevere with the new anibiotics, they too brought on sickness for me whilst PG but they do work and will make you so much more comfortable. UTIs can also lay dormant without symptoms but you will still have the infection - anibiotics are the ony way to get rid 100%. Lots of antibiotics are safe for PG btw....

glush it out of your system with lots of water and a glass of cranberry juice each day

Scoobydooooo · 16/09/2006 12:18

Just be very carful because it can travel to your kidneys this happened to me & i was in agony & throwing up, i was hopitalised for 5 days & on a drip, it was awful.

don't wait if you have an infection you need to treat it because they can travel to the kidneys over time, also drink lots of water & cranberry juice like otheres have said.

MamaG · 16/09/2006 12:19

oh no, i am just recovering from a kidney infection becuase i didn't take antibiotics - thought water and cranberry would work. It didn't.

Just take the pills love!

pennygaff · 16/09/2006 14:59

I've just taken Amoxicillin, but it was for a gum infection it took all the perscription before it showed signs of working, I'd get something else.

CornflakeKid · 16/09/2006 17:45

bubblez - oh no - was going to relay the vomiting/diahorrea effects of amoxycillan to you on our april posts - but thought it would freak you out too much! I had an infection postnatally with my second - saw an emergency doc, was prescribed amox and was very sick etc - rang own doctors to ask if there was a bug going round - no - told them about amox and they said it was a common reaction to the antibiotic - so wtf are they prescribed for if so many react - anyway - changed antibiotic and all okay. I think aswell that the cranberry juice is urban kind of myth - no proven benefits (don't quote me though!) and water better.

Hope feeling better soon - knew should have mentioned it at the time xx

i was prescribed these for an ear infection at about 12 weeks pregnant, they made me feel ill too (not just the morning sickness), looked on the net and found out there were a lot of side affects and didn't pursue the medication cos i was worried, saying that my ear infaction returned with a vengance 2 weeks ago and the docor prescribed me these again, i explained how i felt with them previously and that i was concerned of side affects and baby but she said the risks were really for first few months of pregnancy so not to worry (i'm due any day now!!), took them this time as in agony and feel much better!!xx

SpaceCadet · 16/09/2006 20:19

you need to get some different anti-biotics, amoxicillin is a broad spectrum anti-biotic which is commonly given out when the nature of the infection is not known, its also safe to give in pregnancy, tummy upsets are not uncommon.
however, a an untreated urine infection can have serious consequences as it can travel to the kidneys..i would urge you to take the anti-biotics you have and when the infection is clear. make sure you drink plenty of clear fluids during your pregnancy and perhaps have a glass of cranberry juice every morning, it can help prevent further infections.
