40+ weeks, what to expect from MW appt?

I'm 40 weeks today, and nothing.
Got a mw appt on Thursday so 40+4 (she wanted to see me at 41, but as she's only at the clinic on Thursdays id have been 41+4!)
What can I expect?
Do I need to be asking different questions?

I really don't feel like he's ready to come out yet, so fully expecting to be seeing the mw!

She'll check the normal things like blood pressure etc and then talk about booking you in for a stretch and sweep. Possibly chat about induction and your birth plan if you haven't done it already.
I have my next midwife appointment on weds and I'll be 38 +4 and I'm just expecting a routine appointment.

Nothing really happened at my 40 week appointment (apart from me being grumpy). She booked me in for another at 41 weeks and said we could discuss induction etc for 42 weeks then.

She said I could have a sweep if I wanted but I said I'd wait till 41 weeks.

I had the baby at 40+5, so was glad I kept it low key in the end.

Good luck, these last few days feel pretty endless!

37 wks here, seeing my mw at 38 and 40 wks and she said at the last appointment that she would do a sweep on my 40 wk appt if I wanted one. Not sure if I will but a few weeks to see how I feel!

BeanyIsPregnant · 27/07/2014 19:25

I really really don't want a sweep, done a little research and the facts, to me, seem shady at best- I don't really want someone's hand inside me for no really really good reason! However, when I mentioned I doubted I would be having sweeps a few weeks ago she Hmm and said 'we will see..' Can she force me to have one?

What about induction? Do you have to be induced before 42 weeks?! Argh!

You can't be forced to have a sweep or to be induced. The MW sounds like a charmer! Everytime a HCP wants to even touch you, consent must be given. Without full informed consent, any touching, examination or procedure would be assault.

You are right about sweeps, there is no evidence that they work and some women find them painful and violating.

Don't be bullied into unnecessary procedures just because it's "policy" or the MW wants to tick boxes on her paperwork.

Good luck!

I imagine by the 'we'll see' comment she means you may want to try anything to get it going. I had 3 with ds and they didn't do anything but I was desperate!

BeanyIsPregnant · 29/07/2014 08:44

Why is this so stressful, I thought the stress was meant to start when the baby was here! aha
Still no baby, I really really don't want to be induced :(

pic my midwife isn't great, but I really couldn't be dealing with changing as I'd then have to go to the local hospital for appts instead of my docs, which is 1000x more hassle!

Normal appointment except she booked me for a sweep a few days later.

I really didn't want to be induced but I had to be in the end. It was absolutely fine: I had one pessary, my waters went and ds arrived 12 hours later.
I just got to the point where I was so desperate to have him that I would have done anything!
