reduced movements... baby made a liar of me!

had very few, very sluggish movement ls all day. not wanting to take any chances at 38+5, I called and went in for monitoring. baby proceeded to have a full on dance party. So embarrassing. he needs to get this show on the road... the anxiety is starting to get to me!

Aw I know exactly how you feel, I went for monitoring at 38+5 too only for DS to bounce around like nothing was wrong! He arrived 5 days later!! I believe they do slow down towards the end.......

It could also be the hot weather making baby more lethargic?

No, movements don't slow. You were right to get checked. MWs would much rather see you than not. Get every episode of reduced movement checked.

Been there, got the T shirt, the MEs don't mind, honestly.

yes, was glad I went in. mw couldn't have been nicer. but she had a good laugh when he was bouncing around. Said next time she sees me I'll be huffing and puffing! it was reassuring for sure.

It's just the start of it. Wait until baby is out and you tell people "He never sleeps/drinks/goes to anyone else/eats xyz." That is always the cue for DCs to do exactly what you have just said they don't do.

I was about to say the same as mychildrenarebarmy, it doesn't get better! DD is 6 months old and had a infection recently, required a stay in hospital and antibiotics but the first GP we saw said it was a virus and not to worry as she was so happy. I don't think he believed me that she had been screaming all day!

It's always best to get it checked out and let the little monkeys prove you wrong. Glad all a ok and good luck with the impending labour. Your wee guy will be in your arms very soon.

Does anyone else have movements they can even see from the outside but not feel on the inside? Or am I the only one?

Sometimes I get worried, lie down, look and there's a little kicking sticking out foot! Other times I do feel it from the inside. Weird. It's even happened in front of my consultant who said "look at that kick!" and I didn't really feel much.

My placenta is in the usual place, I have no idea why. Makes it a right PITA to count kicks accurately: half the time I feel them, half the time I see them!

I've been in twice and the same has happened to me but the midwife sayz they can feel the pressure of monitor and go nuts!

oh definitely. if i'm kick counting i have to watch and keep my hand on my stomach as well because i would definitely miss some. when i was monitored today they gave me a little button to push when i felt movement and there were absolutely movements being registered that i didn't feel. tricky little guy!!!

I was in three times with DD1 and not once was I made to feel stupid. The second time she didn't budge until I was given chocolate and then went bananas. That was a sign of yhings to come if ever there was one . When I went in with DD2 she swung from cephalic to transverse
And back again so was there HOURS while they tried to get their 20 minute read. She's still a pickle :)

Nyldn Oh phew. Mine really does it when other people touch/speak to my bump.
In fact if I'm worried and need to count some kicks, I get my DH to pat my belly and say "move!" and I kid you not, every time it works!! We see the kicks.

Sorry to hijack, but can I ask.... Baby's movements seem to have slowed down the last two days but I'm only 25 weeks, should I be concerned or am I still at the stage of getting to know his patterns?

Phone your midwife please. Let her decide.

Honestly, the mw said to me today that she'd rather I came in every day to check then spend a day at home worrying about it. Call them... It really is the best thing to do.

squitz I often can't feel movement on the outside but can see them, but I have an anterior placenta. I only tend to feel the head in my ribs and the bum/feet kicking my lady bits

op midwives would rather we went every day for monitering than worrying about it / having a worse case scenario x

Lula at 25 weeks, many women will only have started feeling movement recently. I rang in at 25 weeks MW was cross with the internet for scaring me and was advised provided movement was felt daily it was a bit early for patterns. Still lots of room for the baby to tuck itself away.

I would call the MW and see what she says though, just for peace of mind.

I've had 2 episodes of reduced movements, on both occasions the midwives were utterly wonderful. Baby danced on cue - even though I'd do e everything I could think of to get the baby moving at home!

However, this promoted some more thorough checks and the threat of immediate intervention due to my age (over 40) and being overdue. Doctor scared the shit out of me. I burst into tears. The midwives were very down to earth and encouraged a full scan to check fluid, placenta, blood flow etc. Luckily all was fine and I will still go back if I feel reduced movements.

As PPs have said, fetal movements should not slow down, have confidence in yourself and go in every single time you need to.

I was told to drink water and lie on my side - sure enough off the kicks started! But she has been SO quiet the last couple of days with the heat. I wonder if I've just not been drinking enough water.

FirsttimerG I would go and get it checked out. Baby should not stop moving because you haven't had enough to drink or the heat. Any movement out of ordinary, reduced or increased should be checked. Please call the hospital, chances are your little one will boogy away as soon the monitor is on.

Blitzy having a cold drink and lying on your side for 2 hours in the first instance is the advice given by the Count The Kicks charity and most midwives and consultants: it's called "prompting" . This is because in many cases the baby may be asleep or - more likely - mum hasn't noticed small movements that she will when lying down. When you call the midwife, as I have several times, they ask you if you have done this before anything else.
Dehydration, fasting, heat and stress (including ironically stress about movement!) can reduce movement temporarily, hence this check rules these 'easy fixes' out: countthekicks.org.uk/mums/your-babys-movements/why-do-babies-move-less/

If movement isn't felt upon 'prompting' or there are still issues, that is when you go into hospital.
They advise to ring the hospital, in combination with prompting.

I rang midwife, she said as long as I felt at least 10 movements throughout the day at my stage (25 weeks) then they're not worried.
