Can coughing hurt baby?

It sounds a bit silly, even as I'm typing this. I've had a horrible cold, for about 2 weeks and now it's turned into a cough. I was just getting off the sofa when I coughed at the same time and I got a really nasty pain in my groin area, just on the right side. Sort of where my bikini line is. It lasted about 5-7 seconds and now has completely gone. I'm just so paranoid that anything I do is going to hurt this baby. I think I'm about 5 and a half weeks, but not sure as I had a miscarriage last month, which I think is adding to my paranoia! Can coughing harm the baby?

I had a really bad cough for the early stages of my pregnancy, I to was worried I was hurting the baby. But it was all fine. :)

Congratulations!

I know it's easy to worry, but honestly, coughing won't harm your baby. Your baby is currently a tiny weeny little thing wrapped up in a lovely cushioned uterus. The pain you felt is probably your muscles twinging as the new hormones relax everything.

Congratulations - I hope you have a healthy and trouble free pregnancy.

It's just your muscles twinging as they get stretched. It's bloody sore at the time, but it only lasts seconds.

I always had to stand up really slowly as it would happen to me every time otherwise...

It's your muscles and ligaments. They're getting stretchy and moving. Sneezing used to cause shooting pains across my bump for the same reason.

Thank you, these replies have made me feel a bit better about it :). Think I'm just being over paranoid.

I've just got over a chest infection at 34 wks and coughed all day and night for 10 days! I was worried about the same thing. I ended up holding onto my bump to try and stop myself straining my muscles.

I had a chest infection too - from week 37 to 38 which might have brought on labour . But no harm was done..
