Early pregnancy bleeding.

Hi, I am eleven weeks with DC2 and have had dark brown spotting for most of the pregnancy (normally after a bowel movement). Went for my morning wee yesterday and it was pink. I called the midwife who said it may not be anything but she could get me in for a scan Tuesday. We didn't want to wait so went for a private scan yesterday afternoon. Baby was fine Smile and got to hear a very strong heartbeat. It moved too Smile The lady looked for source of bleeding but found nothing of concern. Got up today and there is more blood but very dark and has been on off since 630am. I am still going for scan tomorrow and hopefully they will have answers on source of bleeding but has anyone got experience of something like this?

Hi! I had brown spotting from about 4 weeks to 9 weeks (now 21 weeks) and in that time also had 3 substantial bleeds. Like you, early scans confirmed everything was absolutely fine but they never found a reason for the bleeding. The best answer I got was that it could just be a hormonal thing. It's rather frustrating not knowing the cause, or if there even is one, but hold onto the fact that everything is ok with you and your baby. Sorry I can't be much more helpful than that!

I had spotting on and off for first 17 weeks. Like you, mine was often after a poo. Most likely cause was a cervical erosion ie a small patch of sensitive cells on the cervix. Apparently it is common for these to develop in pregnancy (or if pre existing, become more sensitive) due to hormonal changes. The sensitive cells will bleed if they are knocked (for example during sex) or put under pressure (like when you poo).

Of course this is not the cause of all early preg bleeding but I think it's quite common and fits with the bowel movement bit of your OP.

Best of luck with the scan.

Thank you both for responding. I think more than anything I needed to hear that I am not alone!

Hi Lady, I could have written your post! I'm 9.5 and had a dark brown/red bleed last night. I had a red bleed a few weeks ago and went for a private scan & all was fine. (Sorry tmi) I'm constipated so wonder were the two connected.
It's been quite difficult as after mc at 6wks before, this time I have no symptoms which is making me worry all the more that something is up. (hence being awake at this crazy hour!) I'm booked for my 12 wk scan in 2 weeks. Not sure if I can hold out till then!
Glad your scan went well, please keep us posted!

Scan went fine Grin we could see baby moving and kicking legs about. They said it could tale off around 14 weeks or it could continue throughout pregnancy. I doubt I will find out cause of it but as long as baby is ok I will do my best not to stress too much over it.

Great news Lady! Happy days!

Lady it sounds very much like the bleeding I had with DD2. They saw a small sub chorionic haematoma after the first bleed but nothing after the next two. Bleeding came on suddenly - was very dark brown and then settled back to spotting after a few hours.

DD2 was 1 last weekend.

Try not to worry too much - I know how stressful it is.

LadyKooKoo · 31/07/2014 12:00

Well after last Tuesday it stopped for a few days - Yay - but then started again Monday (just a bit of brown) but I put that down to all the housework I did on Sunday.

I went for another scan yesterday (12 week scan) and baby was fine :) and moving around loads. Went to toilet this morning and was pink when I wiped.

Nothing since that initial wipe though. It is so stressful and frustrating. I hate it.

Helloo, your definitely not alone! I've had a few bleeds in my pregnancy, first at 6 weeks was pink when I wiped, darker red at 8 weeks, pink again at 10 weeks and pink again at 18 weeks! Last 2 times it's been a water infection, had scans every time and baby was fine wriggling round, at 18 weeks I had an internal examination and she said due to the extra blood cells that appear due to being pregnant sometimes they just come to the surface and when straining e.g bowl movement or they get irritated e.g sex it just causes a little bleed and heals over itself, I'm now 26 weeks xx
