Dummy help

Packing my hospital bag now, 5 weeks til due date.
We have bought some dummies, still undecided on letting baby have them. DP says yes, I'm not sure.

I just had a couple of questions, should I take them to the hospital and do they need to be sterilised? Surely if they do, they wouldn't stay sterile between now and birth?

I think you're unlikely to need a dummy for a newborn anyway so I wouldn't worry about it.

Are you planning to bf? If so then I definitely wouldn't give a dummy so soon.

And yes it would need to be sterilised, but all you need is some boiling water to do that so it's not much hassle to do it when it's needed.

I just threw one in my bag last time, in the end I was pleased I did as NICU asked me to take one up to them late one night because although DS had just finished a big feed he was still routing and they needed him in the incubator.

They just used boiled water to steralise it before they gave him it.

I took mine along, had it sterilized an then put in a sealed container..
I didn't use it in the hospital but once home. I think my son was 1 week old, and I was BF. he just wouldn't settle and want to suck on breast constantly. So we gave him the dummy and since then he was way more calmer.. He is now 10 month old and still uses it when he is very unsettled. Or very very tired..
I'm pregnant with no2 and will take it along again but will try that she doesn't take it.

I'll leave them out of the bag, not planning on BF. I think we'll just worry about dummies once we are home and if he really needs one or not.

Ljhh, google 'Milton mini travel sterilizer' it's a little ball shaped thing for about a fiver that you can make up (possibly at the hospital), keep a dummy in and it's sterilised in 15 minutes. Keep in your bag incase dummy gets dropped.

I've got a tommee tippee travel steriliser which looks similar to the one you suggested. To be honest I'd completely forgotten that I'd bought it so thank you for reminding me!

I didn't give my DD a dummy, she was BF. She found her fingers at about 6/8 weeks old.......she still sucks them now (only in bed to be fair) and is almost 6. A dummy can be taken away when they get older, fingers can't (I worry about her teeth!). I will deffo introduce a dummy for this baby!

My hv has told me to use one straight away if ff but if bf wait a few weeks inever did with ds but I might consider it with this one

I put one in incase dd was a screamer and I was on a bay. As it was I was in a single room but she still liled having a suckle.
