I had a BMI of 24 when I got pregnant. I'm now just over 20 weeks and have put on 9.5kgs. I put on 3 almost as soon as I got my BFP (boobs immediately went up 2 sizes), then had put on 6.5kg by 12 weeks, so the rate of gain has slowed a bit (thank god!). So now am 9.5kg up and boobs haven't got any bigger since the 6 week mark.

I've not been too stressed about this, as most of my friends and my sister (who were all normal healthy weights pre-pregnancy and have all pretty much lost the pregnancy weight) have told me they've put on 20 - 25kgs.

But then everything I look at on the internet seems to tell me I should put on a couple of pounds (2kg?) in the first trimester and "up to 10" (5kg total??!) over the second. Am I deluding myself? Also, will the rate of gain continue consistently over the next 20 weeks or am I really deluding myself and I'm going to end up putting stackloads? (stackloads more than I already anticipate I mean). Help!

First pregnancy I gained 5st overall, 1st first trimester, 1.5st second, 2st third. Second pregnancy I gained 2.5st overall - nothing first trimester, 1st second, 1.5st third so for me it mostly goes on towards the end.

Rockchick1984 · 15/07/2014 09:33

Can't work in kg sorry!!

Salene · 15/07/2014 09:41

I'm 30 weeks and I've put on 9.3kg

My weigh gain is as follows

Month 1 no weight gain
Month 2 no weight gain
Month 3 0.5kg
Month 4 2.0kg
Month 5 3.0 kg
Month 6 1.1 kg
Month 7 2.8kg

I was BMI 25 to start

This is my 1st pregnancy so nothing else to compare it with.

I think it really depends, I am 32 weeks with twins and only a stone heavier. My bump goes forwards like a football but it is quite big. My stretchmarks are TERRIBLE! However, I seem to have lost weight around the edges, so to speak. My chin and collar bone are slimmer as well as my upper arms. I think I must have lost weight while all the nutrition went to the babies. My appetite has been quite poor.

A woman I met in the hospital cafeteria, on the other hand, said she put on 5 stone by 30 weeks. She had twin boys with her of 18 months and she looked very very slim, so the weight must have shifted dramatically.

Then you get the ones who don't look pregnant much until the eighth month! I also tried the calculator and it didn't seem to match up. As long as the baby is measuring OK for dates I don't think they worry too much.

As for boobs, mine have always been big but only increased a size while pregnant so far. Some people say they have already gone up 3 or 4 sizes... so I think that's another variation :)

Salene · 15/07/2014 09:42

Should of said also my boobs went up quickly , from a 38DD to a 40J by time I was 20 weeks, I'm hoping the don't go up anymore.

sorry, silly computer.
40 J! wow! have you got any signs of milk coming in? I'm still waiting for mine..

Gennz · 15/07/2014 09:50

Ohh thanks for replying, it's so interesting. My arms and collar bones and even upper torso feel a bit thinner but boobs are huge, bump is protruding and thighs are so fat! I felt awful for the first 12 - 14 weeks and ate a lot of crap so I think that's where it all ended up.

Sorry can't work in kg but my weight gain has been:

1st trimester 2lbs
By 2nd trimester 13 lbs
By 35 wks (now) 31 lbs

I started with BMI of 21.5 and have gone from 128 lbs to 159 lbs at 35 wks. Weight gain has been roughly 1 to 2 lbs a week but had a few spurts along the way (18 and 31 wks) where I gained a bit more. Think it's slowing a bit now.

squizita · 15/07/2014 10:57

My size gain is similar to Poycastle - bump looks like I've put a basketball under my top and sticks out a long way (I worry I need something to prop it up lol) but round the edges I don't seem to have gained much. My bum and thighs look sturdier. Watch strap, ankle straps of shoes etc' aren't much tighter, still wearing my usual knickers (3rd trimester) etc'.

I never weigh myself, I just let them do it at the hospital if they want to. I wouldn't know what was normal so it's one more thing to worry about: at least if they do it I get a 'that's OK' or 'too much' there and then.

I was BMI 23 before, although I am quite short so this was size 8-10 (at the bottom of my healthy BMI I look like an ickle waif which I dislike - used to starve myself as a teen and it reminds me- so I never try to diet lower than 22 BMI).

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 15/07/2014 11:03

Ive not weighed myself this pg. Im 25 weeks and still in the same maternity clothes I was in at seven (second baby so bump popped out mega early). As long as I dont need to buy the next size up in maternity clothes im not worrying.

Salene · 15/07/2014 11:26

40J - yup no sign milk or that, just two massive footballs down my top.

I'm quite tall 5ft 10" , but they are dominating my frame , as I said it's not like they where small before at 38DD I just hope I'm not going to end up with two deflated ballons after this :-(

beccajoh · 15/07/2014 11:32

First pregnancy I gained about 10kg, all after 20 weeks (too ill to eat).
Second pregnancy I gained 11kg, but more evenly spread over the pregnancy (no sickness at all).

beccajoh · 15/07/2014 11:33

Boobs went up 2-3 cup sizes each time very early on, six weeks or so.

lornathewizzard · 15/07/2014 11:49

I weighed myself last week for the first time in ages (38 weeks) and I have put on about 3 and a half stone (about 23 kg). I gave up weighing myself weeks ago as it was just annoying me. I put on quite a lot quite quickly but it seems to have evened itself out as time progresses. I was a healthy BMI to start with and don't feel that weight has gone on too much elsewhere, I would say maybe legs and arms have got bigger but I don't feel I look bloated or anything. I was maybe a tad on the skinny side before so maybe my face looks more normal lol! We got married when I was 28 weeks and I love my wedding pictures so cannot complain!

nyldn · 15/07/2014 12:05

i had put on 23lbs at 30 weeks. feel like I've packed on alot since (now 37+4) but haven't weighed myself. I'm guessing I'll come in between 2.5-3 stone in the end. had a bmi of 21.5 to start and have stayed in the same size throughout, so not concerned. cookies/ice cream every night for 8 months unfortunately carry some consequences! oh well!

DorotheaHomeAlone · 15/07/2014 12:34

I've put on 18lbs at 38 weeks. Just stuck to my normal diet. Apparently I look the same everywhere but boobs and bump which stick straight out. That's been gained pretty slowly and consistently from about week 16. Nothing more than a couple of pounds went on before then.

kmini · 15/07/2014 13:02

i've put on 7.5 -8kg at 33 weeks. Started at a BMI of 22.5. Think it can depend on so many factors. I am showing as underweight on here (www.baby2see.com/pregnancy_weight_calculator.html), but everyone keeps saying how massive I am & my face is looking so much plumper - it is depressing!

Don't beat yourself up over it, everyone is different. Its so hard to manage your weight during pregnancy, everything is really out of your control.

Boudica1990 · 15/07/2014 13:09

I am 36+2 with a weight gain of 17kg!! About 2.5stone.

I gained nothing in the first about 10kg in the second and I'll probably end up having gained about 12kg in the third.

I don't know how I have gained so much, it's not like I've been eating for two, and have had very little ice cream or cake or anything like that :( not fair!!

twinklestar2 · 15/07/2014 13:17

I'm 36+5 and I've put on 3 stone. Didn't put anything on in first trimester and have steadily gained since 13 weeks.

Jenninlw · 15/07/2014 14:47

I put on about 3 stone with first child and lost it all by 2 weeks after birth - I believe you need the extra weight for breast feeding a hungry baby!

I've put on a stone by 19 weeks which is more than last time but I started off a stone lighter than last time too - must be another hungry baby!

I had bmi of about 21

ImBrian · 15/07/2014 17:48

I started with bmi of 21 ish. First trimester I put on a pound, I'm now 21 weeks and I'm 7 lb heavier then when I started.

Normally by this point I'm up a stone and I put on 2 1/2 to 3 stone over the whole time. I'm hoping I stay a bit lower this time.

hotfuzzra · 15/07/2014 18:22

I'm 21 weeks and have only put on around 4lbs.
I have not massively changed my diet, I eat what I like and try to have plenty of drink and fruit. I thought you were only supposed to eat 200 cals extra per day (two slices of bread and butter for example) during third tri, so am shocked people put on 3-5 stone? Worried I'm doing something wrong?

Bootoyou2 · 15/07/2014 18:32

Where do the pregnancy Kilos go?

Maternal stores of nutrients
and muscle development
3 Kg
Increased body fluid 2 Kg
Increased blood 1.5 - 2 Kg
Breast growth 600g
Enlarged uterus 1 Kg
Amniotic fluid 1 Kg
Placenta 600g
Baby 3.4 - 4 Kg
Total 11 - 16 Kg

Hot fuzra - not sure how much weight in kilos 3 stone is but it doesn't mean people are getting fat- this was from a random internet site on a quick google (baby2see.com) showing that you can put on over half a kilo with breast growth etc

I've gone up from 58kg ( underweight after breast feeding last baby) to 67.5 so far at 31 weeks.

weebairn · 15/07/2014 19:07

I don't think you can control it that much.

Also amongst my mates there seemed to be not much correlation between how much people put on and how easy it was to lose. Some people put on hardly anything and yet never lost it, or were permanently a different shape even though they lost the weight. Some people were enormous in pregnancy and weighed less than pre-pregnant in weeks.

Same with breastfeeding - with some people the weight falls off even if they stuff their faces, others hold onto the weight while they breastfeed.

It's my second pregnancy and I'm trying not to stress about it. So I don't weigh myself. I eat healthy and I am pretty active. Can't really do much else… last time I put on a bit over 2st and lost a stone of it very quickly after birth. The other stone took a full year despite lots of exercise and healthy eating. But I got there in the end and maintained it easily (until I got pregnant again!) so am going to try not to stress this time!
