Did you know that you were having a big baby?

After a scan today, I have been told that I am having a big baby. I am 27 weeks and baby's approx weight is 1.530 kgs or 3,37 lbs, s/he is on the 90th percentile.

I am worrying that I am going to have a whopper. Dh is 1 of 7 who all weighed more than 10lbs. Dd was about 7 lbs and that was big enough thank you very much!

Had a scan at 37 weeks and DS was above 98th centile. He was born 12 days late and weighed 11 lb 4 oz....

There is supposed to be 10% error margin on these scans but it could be 10% bigger...

cece · 11/09/2006 21:43

Don't worry they will assess if you will be able to deliver. Have they offered you an appointment with the doc?

lucy5 · 11/09/2006 21:45

Oh God! No nothing offered yet but am being scanned regularly because I have high blood pressure. Now I know why everyone has been asking if I am having twins

Well, after having DS1 who was 9lb 2, I asked throughout my pg if DS2 was going to be large 'No, no completely average size' - 8lb 13 (so smaller, but not exactly little) Ditto with DD. She was Ms Average all through the pg apparently, but mysteriously grew the night before I had her so she was 9lb 10. I've had friends who've had the opposite experience too. It really doesn't seem to be very accurate!

Olihan · 11/09/2006 21:49

I was told through my whole pg with ds that he was going to be a whopper. A scan at 36 weeks predicted he would be over 9 1/2 lbs. In the end he was 8 lbs 8 oz so not really huge at all. With dd I had a scan at 36 weeks too and nothing was mentioned about her size then. No one mentioned her size until the midwife in the delivery room was palpating me and said she wasn't going to be tiny. She was 8lbs 4 oz. 4 oz is neither here nor there really so I don't know why they made such a big deal about ds but not dd.

Scans are notoriously bad at predicting baby weights so I wouldn't panic at all. As long as your fundal measurements are within the normal range then you'll be fine.

gigglinggoblin · 11/09/2006 21:50

ds1 was 9lb 13. ds2 was 8lb 7 and it took me longer to recover from him than ds1. ds3 was 9lb7 and it was easy peasy. big baby does not have to mean difficult birth!

Tommy · 11/09/2006 21:51

I measured very big with DS1 and everyone (inc doctors) said it was a going to be a big baby - bearing in mind DH was 10lb 4oz. DS1 was 8lb 130z - not huge at all (compared to what I was expecting!). Measured average with DS2 and he was 8lb 11oz and not as late as DS1!

There's no rhyme or reason to it IME - I wouldn't worry aout it til you get there - all depends on the size of the head anyway as to how hard it is to push out!!

cece · 11/09/2006 22:13

Oh and his birth was easier than DD who was only 8 lbs. The only problems encountered were do to with the cord being wrapped around his neck - an dthat is not dependent on size (I think)

WideWebWitch · 11/09/2006 22:16

ds, they said he was small (abnormally), he was 7lb 1oz
dd (diff father), they had no idea but friends kept saying 'bloody hell, big baby' at my bump, she was 9lb 8oz

sister had no idea second baby was big, 10lb. Born at home, all well.

moral is scans are a bit rubbish sometimes.

lucy5 · 11/09/2006 22:18

I'm feeling more relaxed now.

When I couldn't see my toes at 3 months with ds 2, third baby, I was convinced I was having twins, in fact despite the amount of scans I had which showed only a singleton I was convinced there was two but nope I delivered a whopping 10lb 12oz boy (easily I might add). Then again the smallest of my 6 to date is 8lb 11 oz, however I did freak with baby number 4 as they had been getting progressively bigger. Thankfully from there on they all started getting smaller. Keeping my fingers crossed that baby number 7 is a tolerable size.

Spagblog · 12/09/2006 07:23

No one warned me that DD was going to turn out to be the 10lb lump that she was.

CapedCrusader · 12/09/2006 07:49

The first indication that DS2 was going to be big was when the midwife came to the house for the birth. I overhear her say to DH ' ohhh, this is going to be one big baby'. Yes he was 10lbs 5. And it was a far easier birth than DS1 who was a measly 7lbs in comparison.

However when I was pushing I really thought he was going to rip me in two, though you probably don't want to hear that.

Sophiev73 · 12/09/2006 07:58

I was told ds 2 was 'off the scale' at my scan - and he was only 8lb 4! Mind you he was breech so an awkward bugger in other ways!

katierocket · 12/09/2006 08:01

My DS was 9lb 13oz and I had no idea that he was going to be big. I had an awful labour and delivery but don't think that was anything to do with baby size. You probably don't want to hear this but I believe big babies can be hereditary but more on your mother's side.

cece - wow!

FoghornLeghorn · 12/09/2006 08:38

I was told when pegnant with DD that she would be over 10lb and she was only 8lb 9oz. However, this time I am measuring at least 3 weeks further on than my dates suggest so I was hoping to be offered a growth scan but after reading this I'm not sure there would be any point

Sophiev73 · 12/09/2006 08:45

FoghornLeghorn - might as well push for it anyway - it was only at that scan (38 weeks) they realised ds2 had turned upside down...)

FoghornLeghorn · 12/09/2006 08:48

I've got midwife again in 2 weeks when I should be 32 weeks, DH thinks if i measure over 35 then I should push for the scan - if its wrong its wrong but if its right at least it might prepare us a bit. Baby is laying across my tummy at the minute so am hoping that might be a factor in measuring so big.

poppynic · 12/09/2006 09:10

Hi, I was absolutely huge when pregnant - people were refusing to get into lifts with me - just in case ... and, despite the midwife's assurance that big belly doesn't mean big baby, son was 9'7" (not as big as many of yours but big enough). However his head was only 50% percentile and that slipped out pretty easily. It was the shoulders that caused a bit of a problem with shoulder dystocia - it's just so annoying having to keep pushing when you think you've done the job already..... Anyway only 2 stitches so not too bad.
I think it's much easier for the baby to be bigger generally - though you do miss out on that "cute, tiny baby thing a bit" - and when strangers peered into my pram (proper prams are very usual where I'm from) expecting to see a tiny little dot they appeared to get a bit of a shock at seeing a big bruiser.

The best I've heard of is twin boys at 9' each!!!!!

poppynic · 12/09/2006 09:11

Is number of stitches TMI?

lemonaid · 12/09/2006 09:14

Yes, growth scan at 35 weeks showed DS at 98th percentile and he was born at 98th pereentile on all measurements weighing 10lb 5.5oz, so within a couple of ounces of their prediction. Had an emergency c/section in the end because couldn't get him lower than 0 station, but then he was also posterior which didn't help (had been anterior until a couple of days before the birth, awkward little tyke...).

lucy5 · 12/09/2006 10:25

Thanks all!

This is baby number 2, so I know how much it's going to hurt either way

My ds2 was 10lbs/62cm long/head off chart and no-one said a word antenatally - I kept saying to them - 'i think he's big' - so they wrote 'mother thinks baby is big' in my notes - so patronising! I knew he was big because when he moved - everything moved - there was clearly little fluid around him and in the end hardly moved at all because no where to go! I went in nearly everyday to be monitored after my due date because he didn't move. I'm sure because I had a section with ds1 they thought I would end up having another so didn't concern them.

When he came out - the midwives/doctor all gasped and said 'oh my god - he's huge!' and he was back to back...

I am expecting no. 3 - so will ask when have scan how baby measures up!

shhhh · 12/09/2006 14:07

I had scans from 6-21 weeks (every 2 weeks) due to mc history and each time was told..all is fine. At all of my antenatal appointments I was told "Baby is the cirrect size for your dates". I kept saying Yeah but I'm only 4ft 11ins and I'm "huge". I was reasurred each time..no baby is "AVERAGE". So I now know what that word means LOL..!!

DD was born 40+1 weighing........9lb4ozs...
One of the mw's who saw me during my antenatal appointmets and who laboured part way with me visited me the day aftre dd was born. "Apparently I was the talk of the ward with a baby who was amost the same size as me". I asked why noone knew dd was going to be big, she replied, the knew but didn't want to scare me..!

I'm currently 20 weeks pregnant..am I an idiot??!!!!!!!

Thinking about it, I'm not sure if I would want to know if baby was going to be big or not..Suppose the fact I didn't know helped me to birth without any problems all on g&s oh and a waterpool.
