Did you know that you were having a big baby?

After a scan today, I have been told that I am having a big baby. I am 27 weeks and baby's approx weight is 1.530 kgs or 3,37 lbs, s/he is on the 90th percentile.

I am worrying that I am going to have a whopper. Dh is 1 of 7 who all weighed more than 10lbs. Dd was about 7 lbs and that was big enough thank you very much!

I was always told that DS was going to be a reasonable size but having been 9lb5 myself this was not a surprise. He was 9lb10. I was told that DD was likely to be bigger. She was 8lb12. So not a very exact science.

geekgrrl · 12/09/2006 14:09

dd1 was supposedly on the small side - emerged weighing 9lb 7oz.
dd2 - average size, 9lb 4 oz.
ds - average again supposedly, was 10lbs.

all pretty easy deliveries.

Just read mum26plus....7 . And you seem so calm about it all..! Remarkable..truley remarkable.

bubblepop · 12/09/2006 14:32

i did'nt really realise my last baby was going to be so much bigger than the others until near the end of pregnancy when one or two friends commented how i looked bigger than before. she was born at 39 weeks weighing 8lb 10oz, quite a bit heavier than her sibings. saying that though it was a much easier birth than my 3rd, even though her head measured bigger. position of the baby makes all the difference to the pain factor i think..

cocopop · 12/09/2006 14:37

I was told at 20wk scan with ds1 "oh he's going to be a whopper!" . I was absolutley petrified throughout the rest of my pregnancy imagining giving birth to a 12-13lb baby but actually he was only 8lbs 12ozs, so not too big at all! I'm now pg again and once again have been told that this is going to be a big baby. I'm not going to worry about it this time!!

mum26plus · 13/09/2006 08:31

Slightly off the subject but at the moment I'm calm, you should be in my head as D day gets closer and I remember why each time Ive said "no more" and as long as it doesn't turn out to be any bigger than my 10lb 12er then I'll be happy

3andnomore · 13/09/2006 10:14

Well....with ms I had a scan at 37+6 (as I had GD) and was told that Baby was just about 5Ibs at that time...he was born 3 days later weighing 7Ibs 14oz...so.,..would guess teh scan wasn't to accurate anyway!
Hence me not allowing to be scanned at that stage with ys...even though I had a huge bump....and m/w's guessed a biggish Baby, well, he was 2 weeks early and weighed 8Ibs7 1/2 and I always said that I trust my body to expell my Baby's when they are as big as they should be getting, lol!
Oh in first pg I was constantly told that they believed my Baby to be very big, which left me pretty freaked out, but he was 7Ibs 8oz...so, not really that big...I am 5'6....!
So moral of my ramblings.....I don't think all the measuring etc... is to accurate, lol!

pucca · 13/09/2006 10:17

I had a scan @ 32 weeks and estimated weight then was 6lb 7oz, ds was born @ 38 weeks weighing 9lb 6oz, everyone told me that the scans were not accurate but certainly was pretty spot on for me.

sylvm · 14/09/2006 09:21

I really wouldn't worry. I remember getting terribly upset when at about 32 weeks I was told baby was "a bit on the small size". The ladies at work told me it meant nothing and they were right. DD1 was 8 11b 9.5 oz when she arrived.

eidsvold · 14/09/2006 09:24

dd2 was checked at a 36 week scan as I wanted a VBAC and they wanted an idea of size - I knew she was much bigger than her 6 1/2 lb sister - simply by the size of my belly.

THey estimated she would be 9lb at term and she was 9lb 7oz when born at 41+3. SO they were pretty spot on - However she had a huge head - off the charts and I am so glad she was a c-section - cannot imagine having a vaginal birth with her large head.

katyjo · 14/09/2006 09:40

I was told I was having a big baby when lying on bed in labour!! He was 8lb 1oz so not particularly big at all. My sister has had 3 babies ranging from 5lb to 9.5 lb and she says the worst most painful labour was with the smallest.

lojajo · 14/09/2006 10:09

I was due to have a home birth until my midwife measured me a few days before my due date and decided I was " a bit big" and infact measured the same size as someone who was having twins. Went to hospital for a scan which indicated a probably birthweight of around 10lb and as I was 5'11" that a natural birth "should" be ok. However, I didn't concur and opted for a c-section 4 days later. Good job too - when they lifted my baby daughter out, the surgeon and staff gasped.....she weighed in at 12lb. Surgeon told me that her head was stuck in my pelvis and no way I would have given birth naturally.

3catstoo · 14/09/2006 10:11

I was told at 37 weeks that I was having a big baby.
He arrived a week late and weighed 6 lbs 13 ozs.
So they can get it wrong !

Roselind · 14/09/2006 11:18

My son was 9lb 13 ( 6 days late) and my daughter was 10lb 1.(5 days early) Nothing was ever said at scans so presumably they did all their growing late in the day!I could tell they were big as neither seemed to move as much as my first child. No 3 was born naturally - a water birth - and my GP just said after I thought she would be big but not as big as that! In the long run all 3 have turned out to be slightly taller than average but no effect on weight - in fact son dropped down from 97th centile to around 75th pretty rapidly.
Reading the posts makes me think the scans are pretty inaccurate at predicting birth weight and creating unnecessary concerns about big babies.

MegaLegs · 14/09/2006 11:23

DS3 was 10lbs 15ozs - my first two were big 10lbs 10 ozs and 9lbs. My m/w reckoned number three was smaller! I had no idea how big he was until he was literally on the way out and they were telling me to push and I was telling them to F* Off!

mumfor1standfinaltime · 14/09/2006 11:29

After one of my scans my midwife said it looked like ds would be a 'big baby' and that she would have to keep an eye on me etc.
I saw a different midwife at every appointment, I brought up the 'big baby thing' to one of the midwives and she measured my belly with a tape measure and said 'oh no you wont, your bump is normal size for weeks!' I didn't know if she was right/wrong and had no idea how big ds would be.

I went into labour not knowing that ds was breech and he was born by emergency c section and weighed 9lb 12.

Olihan · 14/09/2006 11:36

My friend has just given birth to her 3rd child via elective c-section. She had to have an emergency cs with her 2nd as she was undiagnosed breech. her dd1 was 9lb 5, her dd2 was 9lb so she was advised to have another cs as this one was measured at over 9 1/2 lbs at 37 weeks. In the end she was only 8lb 2.

Has anyone actually been given an accurate estimate of their babies weight by late scan? Just interested because the margin of error seems to be huge for a lot of people on here.

mumfor1standfinaltime · 14/09/2006 11:38

There are many people talking about late scans - did you get offered one? Is it the norm? Or do you have to be having a big baby to get one? Just curious!

KellyMacplus2 · 14/09/2006 12:51

I was measuring very big for my dates with Ds2, in fact I was huge!!

Midwife very worried baby would be huge and following consultant appt, I was booked in to be induced early. My Ds1 weighed 9lb 13.

I had a scan on the day of being induced as they were unsure if baby's head was engaged. The consultant then told me I was not having a big 'un after all, he said Ds2 was measuring around 7lb. I leapt for joy (well, actually no leaping involved, more a sort of huffing lollop on the table!).

Anyway DS2 turned out to be 9lb 6. Not a whopper by any means, but not 7lb either. As much as I was eating at latter stages, I cannot see him putting on 2 1/2lbs in four hours!!

So I guess they can get it wrong!

ilovecaboose · 14/09/2006 12:53

Was told ds was goning to be at least 10lb - he was 7lb 11ozs.

friend told her baby would be tiny - he was over 10lb.

  • they don't always get it right.
Hilary · 14/09/2006 13:41

My dh was two weeks early and weighed 12lbs 6oz so needless to say I was pretty terrified to be carrying his children! But ds1 was 10 days late and 8lb 14oz, ds2 was 13 days late and 9lb 1oz and dd was only 1 day late and another 9lb 1oz. And I had the easiest labours of anyone I know. Big doesn't have to mean a horrible labour and a daddy who was a big baby doesn't mean your own children will be enormous either. Phew!

motherinferior · 14/09/2006 13:43

I was told DD2 would be big. And she would have been, if she'd continued growing at that rate to 40 weeks. She emerged at 37+5, weighing less than seven pounds.

micra · 14/09/2006 13:50

Cornflake = very like my experience. No-one said a thing about size with DD and she was 10lb 5oz at 42 weeks after nearly 24 hours labour and lots of bleeding. Head size and length off scale.

With DS, I specifically asked every midwife about baby's size, all were non-commital "might be 8lb". Asked consultant for late scan to see if baby big - "no point, if you got one large baby out you can manage another, we only do late scans in spcial circumstances" - he was right, DS was 10lb10oz at 41 weeks, only a 7 hour labour, but "longest baby" the midwife had ever seen, large head (off scale or nearly off).

I'm not tall but I was a 10lb baby too. DP is 6ft. Who knows?

lucy5 · 14/09/2006 14:16

Thanks all, I guess i will just have to wait and see!

I've just had my 26 week check up with my doctor, and he measured my tum at 26cm and said it was a big'un. The midwife said a similar thing a few weeks ago. Not sure what to make of it now. Do bigger babies tend to pop out earlier or is that a myth? And if it is big, can I request another scan on the NHS? This is my first and I have no idea what to expect!
