Did you know that you were having a big baby?

After a scan today, I have been told that I am having a big baby. I am 27 weeks and baby's approx weight is 1.530 kgs or 3,37 lbs, s/he is on the 90th percentile.

I am worrying that I am going to have a whopper. Dh is 1 of 7 who all weighed more than 10lbs. Dd was about 7 lbs and that was big enough thank you very much!

My late scan was due to having a low placenta (which moved by wk 38).
With my subsequent children I didn't get late scans.

They predicted my dd at about 10lbs, also said she had a massive head. I had to have a late scan as she hadn't engaged and they were worried about her being able to pass through my pelvis. In the end I had a cs (nothing to do with her head or size) and she came out at 8lbs 4oz with a perfectly normal head!

I think I'm just hoping she's on time or early, cos she's due a week before Christmas and I really don't want her to be late! It'll be so nice to have her by Christmas, and it'll be a real bummer if we have to spend the whole of Christmas worrying about when she's coming instead of sharing it all with her.

I'm hoping that I will be early too. As s/he is due 8 days before dd's birthday which is 12 days before Christmas. Good planning!

Do you think they'd induce me before Christmas if I asked?

I have just returned from a hospital visit at nearly 36 weeks, having had a growth scan and now I am totally confused! I wish I hadn't had it!
Apparently the baby weighs 8lb 1oz with over 4 weeks to go. My ds1 measured quite a lot shorter in fundal height and weighed in at 8lb 14.5oz, so I guess this one may top the 10lb mark. HOWEVER, they did warn me that the growth scan is only accurate to give or take 25% of the guesstimate, so it really is pretty useless.

I now have to go back at 39 weeks to do it all again, but it seems pointless with the margin of error that seems to be experienced by pretty much everyone on here!

All three of my children were predicted to be small - about 7lb. THey were 9lb 12, 10lb and 10lb2. Very small.

mum2jemima · 14/09/2006 15:57

I had no idea but midwife did seem to have suspicions towards the end. Baby j was 4.1 kg, just over 9lbs but luckily born by C section at 10 days late. Perhaps part of the reason she was big.

overthehill · 14/09/2006 23:19

I was told by midwife at my last antenatal appointment that she thought DS would be 7lb 12oz... he weighed in a few days later at 10lb 2 1/2 oz!!! And, I might add, I'd been in the delivery room for precisely 5 mins when my waters broke and midwife hadn't even had time to start on the paperwork. He was born 15 mins later with no pain relief - & I was 41 at the time! NCT would have been proud of me!!

Scans to assess the size of the baby are notoriously inaccurate, often by 1lb either way, but can be further out than this. My last baby was estimated at 7 1/2lbs by a series of scans but was actually 10lb 13oz and born completely with only a small graze. Don't panic! Lots of people find that larger babies can be easier to birth than small ones

Susan73 · 15/09/2006 11:18

I'm only about 8 1/2 stone and my first baby was 9lbs which shocked the doctors and had to come by cc. I was monitored throughout my last pregnancy because the baby was above the 100th percentile and when she came she was a mere 7lbs 6 ounces so I wouldn't worry at all because those scans don't seem at all accurate in my opinion.

busybusymum · 18/09/2006 11:29

At a hospital appointment my doctor arranged for a another scan because he was concerned becuase baby was "on the big side" Went for scan saw another Dr who said "no if anything it's going to be a little one"
DS birth weight was just over 11lb.

Daisymoo · 18/09/2006 11:37

I had serial growth scans in my last pregnancy which are supposed to be far more accurate than one-off growth scans. All the way through he was predicted to be about 7 1/2 - 8lbs. Popped out pretty easily and shocked us all by being 10lb 13oz!

If you are having a big baby, it is particularly important to try and be upright and mobile as it gives the baby more room to be born.
