Do you think my GP will sign me off work?

Hi all, I'm 35 wks at the moment and I'm due to finish work next Thursday 21 September. Trouble is I'm really short of breath, knackered and can't face coming in to be honest. My first pregnancy was fine and I worked until 2 weeks before but I'm so tired as my dd is 20 months and this is probably what's causing my tiredness. Do you think my GP would sign me off and if so does your maternity kick in or would I get sick pay do you know?

yes he will. I don't know about your maternity pay.

Ask your boss if you can start your maternity pay, if not you will be off on sick, and they will still have to pay your maternity pay.

I went to GP with anaemia & tiredness and got a sniffy "Pregnancy is not an illness".#
HE got a hormonal "well, you WOULD say that cos you're a man and have absolutely NO IDEA how tiring it is to be dragging another person around inside of you tapping into all your resources". The mw told him to sign me off for a week
I don't know how it would affect your maternity pay though, sorry

I really sympathise with you. I thought that if you were signed off work after 32 weeks then mp kicks in but someone told me it is after 36 weeks. You could find out by going onto a website about maternity pay though ive got good advice from different ones. x

anniediv · 11/09/2006 14:20

If you go off sick after 36 weeks but before your agreed 'stop work date', your maternity leave and pay kicks in straight away, as I understand.

I'll check the internet. I finish work on 21 September but then I've got 2 weeks holiday booked and then my mat leave starts on 9 October.

Cheers, it's just a bit odd as I'm taking holidays before my mat leave starts. I might ask work, if the Doc signs me off if I can take the hols I've tagged on the end of my mat leave now and come back to work earlier.

if he signs you off for a pregnancy related reason, your mat leave will start - whether or not you've got leave booked. Otherwise it will be sick pay as normal.

Discomonkfish · 11/09/2006 15:22

Thanks all, I'm going to see if I can bring my holidays forward from the end of my mat leave or maybe work from home.

You should still be able to take your holidays. I took 5 weeks before starting my ML & got paid for it OK, I had spoken to ACAS about it though & told work I had so they didnt argue at all & I was expcting a battle. Good Luck

yvonne2803 · 11/09/2006 19:00

I am taking all of my holidays before I go off on ML at 29 weeks. There is no problem doing this as your holiday entitlement still accrues while you are off on ML. I've just taken 2 weeks holiday, am going back to work for 2 weeks then taking another 2 weeks holiday!

squishy · 11/09/2006 19:58

I'm also taking 2 weeks leave and my mat leave is starting at 39 weeks. As someone else mentioned, if you want to double check, ring ACAS, they're very friendly and knowledgeable and will give you concise and accurate advice about your rights
