Can I just take one antihistamine?!

I am literally dying with my allergies...can I just take one? would it help? make a difference? harm baby?

Yes. Benydryl is one that is absolutely fine to take. I take when I can't sleep.

I took a piriton a day last year when it was really bad. The GP said 'try to take nothing but if you have to take one piriton a day'. I don't think anyone really knows what they're talking about but DS was born in September weighing 9lbs 4oz and seems pretty ok so far!

My packet of cetrizine didn't say anything on it about not taking when pregnant. And I looked it up and it said it was fine but the midwife said it's not known to cause problems but still isn't advised to take. She said to take if it was really bad which has put me off. But been sneezing and eyes itching all day today!

I'm currently on loratidine - for severe itching (and am 36 weeks pg). Prescribed by my GP after they looked into which one would be best. Midwife told me to carry on taking it for as long as I need. Always worth speaking to GP first in case they think one is better than the other, but if you really insist, they will probably prescribe one for you.

Its because they've not been tested on pregnant women rather than them not being safe iyswim. I'm allowed to take piraton and have had the odd cetirazine. Prevalin has been a god send too.

Prevalin is good and mw also told me i could take tabs if really bad.

I was on citrazine for 5 days as dr at walk in thought I had allergic reaction it was only 10 mg a day but did help with my sneezing but the rash turned out to be cellulititis but she told me it wasnt safe to take but if my symptoms waranted it then I could then shewalked out of the room and came back and said id take them a few days won't harm u, talk about contradiction, I went to my own gp who said I wasnr suppose to take them and gave me beconase spray and eye drops the beconase spray made me sneeze even more 12 times in a row and whilst heavily pregnant v embarassing! Thankfully I'm over it now but have a stinking cold thanks to my lovely ds

Yes, I've just been prescribed nasal spray and antihistamines and I'm 21 weeks.

my gp told me piriton was safe to take but to try to limit it to when absolutely necessary.

I've just been using Prevalin and it helps a bit - I just have to stay away from inlaws as I'm allergic to their cat (as well as having hayfever) and even if they come to visit us they leave cat hair everywhere. I seem to be getting more and more allergic!

I spoke to my GP about hay fever meds from the beginning. She said that while they know the older drowsy-making ones are safe, it's probably the case that antihistamines are generally safe in pregnancy, although there hasn't been much research on the newer (usual) ones. Loratidine is generally considered safe to take on a regular basis after the first trimester.

The one pill you took is so unlikely to be harmful. Beyond 1st trimester you might be able to take Loratidine regularly - ask GP. My GP also said the Beconase nasal spray is fine to use throughout.
