I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk/
If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:
024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy#!prescribinginfosub

I would like to thank Everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Fingers crossed for you kali, awful situation to be in.

So, despite taking Fybogel twice daily and drinking A LOT of water, the Ondansetron has still, how do you say.... clogged me up.

What are safe laxatives to use in pregnancy and can I just buy over the counter?

starrynight123 · 25/07/2014 10:02

This heat is starting to really affect me... barely slept a wink last night and feel more nauseous as a result... so tired.

kali good luck today.

kalidasa · 25/07/2014 11:31

Frenetic - can you drink ok? If so I'd go straight to movicol. You want stimulant laxatives NOT bulking agents which will make it worse. If you can tolerate pills you can try senokot (senna tablets), sodium docusate and bisacodyl, they are all stimulants. You can also try glycerin or bisacodyl suppositories which can help clear things from the other end. If all else fails you can try a fleet (phosphate) enema but that's pretty extreme. None of these things are officially recommended in pregnancy but they are what a GP will try and what they use in hospital. I have had endless conversations with the hospital pharmacist about this! Do tackle it aggressively. I suffered unusually badly but had to come off the ondansetron in the end when ALL laxatives plus daily enemas for a week in hosp didn't work. Obviously you want to avoid that so really throw the book at it now. Being really bunged up makes the nausea/lack of appetite worse anyway. Others may be able to share what worked for them - I don't know anyone else who had to come off it, and I was on a huge dose for ages, so it should be manageable if you can find the right combo. If you are eating and drinking fairly normally and able to move around a bit that will help too.

So I am stuck here at least till Monday and DS has chicken pox - only v mildly but it means he can't come in, which in turn means DH can't come over the weekend either. Bit depressing but trying to stay positive. There's a really nice lady in the bed next to me at the moment who's here till at least Tuesday so at least I have some company.

Hope everyone is hanging on and avoiding hospital.

Basgetti - how are you?

basgetti · 25/07/2014 16:13

Hi Kali, I'm doing ok today, thanks for asking. Was a bit sick this morning but I've kept my lunch down and managing to drink at the moment. Spent most of the afternoon in the garden whilst DS plays on his trampoline, he's lost his first tooth today so the household is currently gripped by tooth fairy fever, very exciting!

That's a shame about your DS, hope he gets better soon. And fingers crossed you can go home on Monday! x

kalidasa · 25/07/2014 16:32

Oh and DS did his first wee on the potty! He's been really interested and trying for a while and was very excited and pleased with himself. Would be so brilliant if he was mostly out of nappies by the time the baby arrived!

LucindaE · 25/07/2014 17:53

Hello,Everyone, Mother Hen finally back, my pc was down for a week after my return and I tried to log in from library, but it wouldn't let me, unprotected site for some such. So sorry, but Elizabethsmum Meerkaand Livingzuidand All have been doing a sterling job and you can't better such knowledge as they have.
Kali I'm so sorry you are still so ill and in hopstial. Welcome to New People and sorry that others are on drip, too, though it will hoipefully make you feel a little better.
I'll try and catch up on a few posts. Hope Everyone Else isn't too bad. Any news of births, etc.

Welcome back lucinda we have missed you!

Glad you are managing a little better today basgetti

kali sorry about your DS's chickenpox although glad for him that it is fairly mild. Great news about the potty! Hopefully he will train during the warm weather! Hope today has gone ok sans drip?? (Crosses fingers and toes for you). I suppose an upside of the few extra days is that it will give some time to know how you are managing on oral meds.

Sorry you are suffering starry- on the home straight now!

You have not missed any new arrivals lucinda everyone has hung on for your return- I think Iworry is next closely followed by starry Grin

YankNCock · 25/07/2014 21:50

I had HG 5 years ago with DS1, just wanted to say good luck to you all.

I can still remember the rage I felt when the hundredth person that day asked 'have you tried ginger?' If anyone is still asking any of you this question, I'd be very happy to punch them in the face whilst you puke on their shoes.

Meerka · 26/07/2014 09:45

lovely to see you again lucinda! how was the holiday?

kali I hope your son's c'pox clears up quick

hello yank ... yep, the ginger thing is SOOO annoyuing. ALong with not being taken seriously and given no help :/ so nice to have survived it at last! :) did you have a boy or girl? :)

LucindaE · 26/07/2014 09:46

Elizabethsmumand Meerka and Everyone Happy to be back, you've done a brilliant job, great advice. Kali I can't believe how brave you are being, especially giving advice when so ill. Sorry about DS's chicken pox. Hugs too robust, gentle pats on offer if acceptable.
YankiNCock Ha, Ha! Sadly, they are still saying it, I'm afraid, and I'm a great one for suggesting puking on shoes as I should have when my GP refused meds myself.
*Troedheim I remember your name well from a little while back - how did things go and I wonder myself about bf. I was an unusual case in that it made vomit in the early days after birth but that was very unusual,I think Kali had that too. People breastfeeding with this must be troopers.
BabyTink So glad meds seem to be working and you were out in the garden.
Starry Lottie Okla and others, waves.
FreneticFox Work situation - has it improved?
I hope all those in hospital are feeling a teeny bit better today.
The man who upgraded my pc - I'm still blundering about on it - has put all my word files somewhere where the sun don't shine. I hope to find my list of due dates, I could have sworn it was at the beginning of this thread, but maybe it's at the end of the last - may well have been updated.
Apologies to anyone rudely ignored.

kali hope you get out on Monday and basgetti hope you feel better. The heat has subsided here thank goodness starry so I hope you are finding some respite too.

Well we are gearing up for our move to Scotland - this time next week we will be there and getting settled in! I'm torn feeling so sad to leave but so excited to start our next phase as a family. And I start work in two weeks eek.

This may or may not give hope, but I am also planning in my head when I would like to try for dc2 if we are so lucky to have a healthy pregnancy (as in the baby being healthy!). I am 36 next month so don't want to leave it too long and also don't want a huge age gap between Daisy and a sibling. And the whole misery of hg and pregnancy and food aversions hasn't put me off, I would do it all again :) it is easy to say but do hang in there, they are adorable creatures and you will have such fun once they are here.

I'm suspecting some of my ongoing problems with food and diet and nausea are thyroid related. Waiting to hear my results next week.

DH has taken her to a family gathering today where all the aunts and uncles can meet her and my MIL can lord it as grandmother, all my idea of a nightmare so I am having some sleep and going near the end. Having severe hayfever has some perks!

And for smiles here is a pic of Daisy as we made our way to the beach earlier this week :)

FloweryBoots · 26/07/2014 15:49

Hi ladies. Bit of advice please. Is there anything I can get over the counter for the sickness (if I lie and say I'm not pregnant/sed DH)? My metoclopromide will run out tomorrow - I hadn't realised how far I'd got down it and I rang the doctors surgery on Friday and tried to get them to request a repeate prescription despite me not having on repeate and the receptionist said they couldn't because my notes said I had to be reviewed, and they had no appointments and said it was too late to arrnage a phone consultaiton. Ill ring on Monday and try to get a triage call (that's what they do on Mondays at our surgery) and hopefully they will issue a repeate prescription then without me having to go up, but I'd really like something to try to tied me over.

starrynight123 · 26/07/2014 17:40

flowery I take domperidone which you can get over the counter and it is called Motilium. My consultant okay’ed it for use in pregnancy for me. I took metaclopramide for just over 12weeks and then was switched to domperidone and have been taking that 3 times per day since. I’m not sure if it would be okay for you to take it, but I’ve been okay.... Not sure how much that helps!

living Daisy looks utterly gorgeous!!!! Good luck with the move to Scotland. I can’t believe time has gone so quickly. I’m glad it has become a bit cooler over there and only wish it was the same here!

I had my pre-cs assessment yesterday and now only have 6 days until D-Day! Speeding by!

LucindaE · 26/07/2014 18:14

Livingzzuid Lovely picture, so sweet. Sorry about severe hayfever, though. I hope the event turns out not too wearying.
Starry So glad the end of your prison sentence approaches...
Flowery Besides Starry's good adv ice on domperidone, I know you can get cyclezine over the counter (which has b een used in pregnancy for decades) if not pregnant - supreme irony.
Hope everyone is coping in this heat..
xx

OP posts:
kalidasa · 26/07/2014 19:10

The hospital pharmacist says they are now cautious about domperidone as it has been linked to heart irregularities, and if you are vomiting a lot you can be low on potassium which itself can cause heart issues. This is v recent advice though apparently. If I was buying over the counter I'd go for cyclizine I think as it seems to have the lowest risk of side effects.

I am still on the drip here because I still can't drink enough even though I am eating ok. They reduced my steroids today and it has been a struggle - still eating but a real effort of the will and I feel exhausted. I don't think I'll be out on Monday, maybe Tuesday. To be honest it's been so so long now that I'm trying not to expect/hope for anything in particular. DH broke done with DS in Central London today just to add to the stress! Feel that we deserve a break soon. Just plodding on one day at a time.

The junior doctors rotate and cover every third weekend here - this is the THIRD time I've been in for the weekend with the chap who's on at the moment!

Meerka · 26/07/2014 19:22

flowery you can get cyclizine over the counter if you lie. Ask for some B6 as well. cyclizine + B6 together are more effective than cyclizine alone.

You should feel some improvement within 24 hours (it takes a bit of time to build up) if it's going to help at all.

fingers crossed as ever, Kali

Oklahoma · 27/07/2014 08:47

Morning ladies, just checking in to say hi.

No change here, still puking away but the days are only passing.

Lucinda welcome back, we missed you! Though E's mum Meerka and Living have been doing a fab job.

Starry yay for impending freedom. Very excited for you.

LucindaE · 27/07/2014 10:00

Kali This is an endurance test, my goodness, I wish I could think of appropriate words to say to encourage, but it would seem an impertinence from me, when my own sufferings years ago were as nothing besides yours. I'm just hoping that this hideous stage passes asap as is everyone on here of course.I can't work out from the thread how long you've been in this time, but from your comments on the junior doctor it looks like its been most of the time I was away. I suppose anything you have to face in life from now on will be almost easy, after this...
Okla Thank you. Hope youl're ok. elizabethsmumLivingzuid Meerka and Everyone have obviously doing a brilliant job, I get the impression elizabethsmum was in hospital for long periods at a time too, which is encouraging for current severe sufferers.
I've found my due dates file, but it's outdated now. Do the new people want their dates added?
Apologies to anyone rudely overlooked.

OP posts:
kalidasa · 27/07/2014 10:18

Lucinda - yes I've been in continuously, I haven't been home at all since you've been away I don't think. This admission has been about three weeks now, but in the last six and a half weeks I've only spent about 10 days at home (two short stints). Hard to believe it has been like this despite all our preparation, pre-emptive meds etc. Don't want to scare anyone planning a second because almost everyone does seem to have a better time with good preparation. I cannot begin to imagine what this time would have been like if I'd been totally unprepared for it. As it was I had exhausted all other options and was on steroids by the end of week 7.

Really grumpy this morning because the night staff last night were really a bit useless, spent hours faffing around and getting things wrong and didn't turn the lights off till midnight. I really think there is no need for this, especially as we are woken at 6 regardless. This ward is largely surgical and two women in the bay are recently post-op and really need their sleep. Trouble with being in hosp so long is that you start to notice all the mistakes and inefficiencies!

LucindaE · 27/07/2014 18:39

Kali My goodness, I'm crossing all fingers and toes it eases off a bit, anyway, and soon. I have never been in hospital so long as that, but I found you noticed the lack of sleep more than anything, and as you say, it's what you need most when ill.
xx

OP posts:
elizabethsmum · 27/07/2014 21:46

Are you in a side room kali or on a main ward- I was lucky enough to have a side room mostly for my admissions in second pg, (nowhere like what you are enduring but was admitted 5 times from weeks 7-11 varying from a few hours to 4 days at a time). When on the main ward the lack of sleep makes things even less bearable doesn't it?
Another quick thought- not that I could drink much eithrr but always struggled more in hospital as the water they give you to drink is always lukewarm ime. I found it easier with very cold, mildly carbonated drinks such as elderflower presse. You have probably tried everything already but just a thought that maybe dh or a friend/relative could bring something in for you and could ward staff keep it cool in the fridge for you. (clutches at straws for you!) Xx

TheJiminyConjecture · 27/07/2014 22:46

Hello ladies,
I'm after some advice please, I had HG with my daughter - hospitalised multiple times as I'm sure you all are familiar with. It's taken a good 5 years to get to this point where we're thinking of ttc no 2.

Thing is, I'm terrified. Is there anything at all I can do to prepare? Have there been any developments? I found metaclopromide kept me puking the least but my Dr mentioned in passing that it's not suitable before 12 weeks. I've not even had the coil removed and this is all I can think about.

Good luck with your pregnancies, just keep counting those days.

MrsCK · 27/07/2014 23:15

Hiya....I'm back again Sad I'm now 13+4 and sickness is happening just at night now after dinner. tonight it's been so bad I can't keep any water inside me. I just want to cry. my head hurts and I'm dizzier than ever. what can I do right now to help? I'm going to go back to the docs tomorrow....I just wish it would stop Sad

elizabethsmum · 27/07/2014 23:40

mrsck do you have any meds at all? You sound like you need some if not. Your dr will be able to see if you are dehydrated- the head ache is a sign that you are. Try and suck on some ice just to get a small amount of fluid into you if possible. Have you been admitted to hospital this pg at all so far? It is horrible and what you are feeling is totally normal. Try and get a little sleep if you can.

Welcome thejiminy I was in your position after a horrid 1st preg with hg I was terrified of another and waited 4 years. Had pre conception counselling with consultant at my request, this was on the premise of my previous severe PE but I was more worried about hg. I did get hg again (twin pg second time!) lots of admissions but it went away more or less at 15 weeks so all in all not as bad for me second time round. I didn't have any pre-emptive meds but kalidasa will be able to advise on that. I found a combination of cyclizine (injected and oral) and ondansetron worked better for me second time round. I also feel you do get taken more seriously by GP/hospital if you have had it before. Sorry that I have not been able to provide a particularly reassuring answer but I do know how you feel - good luck xx
