I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk/
If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:
024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy#!prescribinginfosub

I would like to thank Everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Morning all. Just saying hi really. Nothing new my end.

Hope everyone is coping, the heat is a real struggle.

basgetti · 21/07/2014 11:45

Hi all, hope everyone is doing ok, especially with this heat. Kali I hope things have improved for you and you are getting a bit of respite from it all.

I'm still taking the Metoclopramide, it's working really well. I had a bit of nausea and a couple of bouts of retching but haven't vomited since thursday which I think is the longest I've gone without being sick since about 8 weeks. It's given me a bit more energy to actually interact with poor DS, I even took him for a little outing to the park yesterday which was lovely and would have been impossible just a week ago. I'm praying it continues!

starrynight123 · 21/07/2014 14:14

Hi all from me too! This heat has got me looking like a lobster and feeling like a beached whale. I don’t know what I’d do without cold watermelon to eat! I’ve already scoffed a bowlful today and i could easily just launch myself face first into another bowlful!

Babytinx11 · 21/07/2014 16:01

Hi guys really hoping for some advice I am only 7 weeks but already finding it tough I can barely keep anything down even drinks it's making me dizzy and tired as well I've had cyclizine from my gp but it only worked for a few days and I am back to throwing everything up :( any one found anything at all that helps?

starrynight123 · 21/07/2014 16:17

Sorry to hear that baby. There is a wide range of medications you can take and I’d recommend contacting Pregnancy Sickness Support for guidance - their number/website is pinned to the top of this thread. You will find something, don’t worry!!

Babytinx11 · 21/07/2014 16:19

Thanx starry finding it really tough DS never stops and I can't move without throwing up :( I'll check out pregnancy sickness support :)

kalidasa · 21/07/2014 19:43

Hi all, I'm still in hospital - goes without saying at this point really - and they're still threatening me with an NG tube though they haven't actually done it yet. Am managing to eat a bit more and vomit a bit less but still on drip, pump, big IV steroid dose etc, also having probs with anaemia and muscle spasms caused by low potassium. Just hoping things are starting to edge upwards however fractionally. 13 weeks on Wednesday.

Meerka · 21/07/2014 20:00

HI baby, congrats and sorry to see you here. As starry says there's a lot more meds you can try. They -are- safe and the governemtnal NICE guidelines do recommend getting the right meds that work for you and getting them early, that can help stop the HG progressing too far.

it's very well worth asking the doc for stronger stuff. Can you look at the links above and the recommended meds, eg metoclopramide, domperidone, promethazine, prochlorperazine, worst case ondansetron? Can you also take someone with you (husband?) to act an advocate? it really really helps.

If they won't give you anything, ask for another doctor or do ring Preg Sickness Support helpline. Leave a message and they will get back to you. The elderly doctor there is very experienced and a real sweetheart.

kali ... glad things are marginally better. Do hope it improves a bit further for you!!

< waves at okla and basgetti and everyone>

cooling off here thank heavens but weirdly, the nausea seems to be strengthening. I mean it's still very low compared to actually being preg - very - but all the same, its there a lot of the time and really starting to become a drag, specially in the last few days. 35 degrees, it was. The Pipsqueak was fine, I wasn't!

elizabethsmum · 21/07/2014 21:08

Hi all

Yay for slight improvement kali keeping fingers crossed that this continues from now on xx

welcome to the thread babytinks so sorry you are suffering. Can't add much to the excellent advice you have already been given, definitely go back to gp as cyclizine is clearly not working for you and dehydration is a real risk particularly in this heat xx

Blimey meerka did the nausea continue for you this long last time around. 35 degrees urgh!!- hope it cools down a bit for you soon!

Hi to everyone (hope everyone still just about surviving the heat) xx

kalidasa · 21/07/2014 21:26

Meerka - as you know I think I also had probs last time with ongoing nausea and even occasional vomiting. It was a bit mysterious but stress, tiredness and breast feeding hormones were all factors for me I think - can't remember if you are bfeeding but if you are, has baby recently started needing more/having a growth spurt so triggering a surge in production?

Night nurse has just brought me a cup of tea. Usually I can't eat or drink at all in the evening so this is good. (Tea is quite a safe drink for me because it is one of the few things that tastes the same on the return!)

Fingers crossed I'm going to dodge the dreaded tube and maybe even make it home one day.

Meerka · 21/07/2014 22:26

hmm yes kali i am mostly bfing and last week was fully bfing. and it started getting worse then ... plus being very tired and the heat was just draining.

I did get the nausea after last time, yes. though well, tis WAY better than when preg. at first it feels like it's totally gone because it's that much better, but now things are settling (11 weeks on from the birth) I do notice it more, plus um yes, upchucking. Specially with cleaning my teeth, toothpaste was always a trigger

It's really minor compared to what you guys are going thru tho!!! Kali, Ill hope that some of the tea stays down ...

hope everyone can sleep well

Babytinx11 · 22/07/2014 09:00

I have an appointment with my gp this morning so fingers crossed they will help I was really starting thing I was just going to have to put up with it hoping to get some magic medicine today :)

freneticfox · 22/07/2014 10:01

Another week, another failed anti-emetic. Has anyone else felt like a roulette wheel?

Metaclopromide was working brilliantly for me for about a week, but then in the last five days, I'm back to shaking on the bathroom floor from about 1am-5am. Went back to GP this morning who said it's time to try Ondansetron - anyone got experience with this drug?

kalidasa · 22/07/2014 10:37

Meerka - I bet that's it, the extra feeding.

kalidasa · 22/07/2014 11:01

Frenetic - ondansetron is very effective for almost everyone, much more so than most of the others. It does constipate you badly though so stick to the minimum dose you need and start using laxatives as a precaution as soon as you start taking it. Don't wait for there to be a problem.

I FINALLY had negative ketones this morning, for the first time in over a fortnight. They are going to try taking me off the pump and switching back to oral meds tomorrow. I threw up my attempt at breakfast though, no surprises there. Just about to try some tea and a biscuit.

Meerka · 22/07/2014 11:12

frenetic ... what Kali said! very good stuff, just make sure you take something to keep you moving .. Movicol is good, there are others (will you be able to keep it down?)

btw, a big study feb 2013 gave very good results for ondansetron in preg =)

kali very pleased to hear you have negative ketones! taht's good news - now stay that way, lady :D Best of luck with the oral meds. Are they talking about discharge yet or are they being cautious?

kalidasa · 22/07/2014 11:23

Meerka - they are working towards discharge but they've got to get me off the pump, the IV and the IV steroids so even if it goes smoothly it'll be a few days I think. Personally I suspect that the switch to oral steroids will be tricky because if I throw them up I'll lose control again. Also hard to know how much difference the pump is making. But we'll see.

Lalalax3 · 22/07/2014 12:13

Seriously suffering today. Vommed in the shower and couldn't even think about brushing my teeth without gagging. Just want to go back to bed and sleep but have to pick up my meds from the chemist, a 20 min walk in baking London heat. Just sitting here sipping very cold water and steeling myself. 34+1 today...

basgetti · 22/07/2014 13:19

Kali that's great news about the ketones, I hope you continue to improve.

mrsgembles that sounds miserable, I hope you were able to get to the chemist and the meds help you feel better.

I feel terrible today. I'm really nauseous and keep retching. I'm not vomiting which I know is the point of the meds and I should be pleased, but getting no relief from feeling sick isn't nice!

Meerka · 22/07/2014 15:09

I hope you've managed to get them mrsgembles

have you tried baby toothpaste or just mouthwash instead of toothpaste? And I hope you have some lovely cold icecubes to put on your forehead when you get back ...

basgetti yes the nausea is worst of all :(

LikeSilver · 22/07/2014 15:17

I came home from hospital yesterday after admission with maximum ketones last Thursday. I went in on cyclizine and came out on cyclizine (yes that makes sense, thanks dr). I saw a locum GP this morning who gave me ondanseton. I am five hours into my first tablet and it's like a weight has been lifted. I vomited all last night and this morning and would have had ketones by this evening but I haven't been sick in five hours. I ate toast! I can move around the house! It's like a total revelation - please let it continue.

Hugs to everyone in need x

kalidasa · 22/07/2014 15:30

Excellent news likesilver, what a sensible GP! Ondansetron is expensive but still a lot cheaper than being in hospital. What dose are you on? Do please start taking a laxative now though, don't wait until you are blocked up.

Trondheim · 22/07/2014 15:33

Likesilver, great news. Hope the ondanseton keeps working.

Went out for mcdonalds for lunch as I've been picturing their chips as something I could eat. What is it about that place? Maybe because none of it is real food.

Scrolling mn and twitter etc makes me feel sick! Can't watch anything that's rocking eg DH rocking DD in pram.

Cyclizine stopped working after a few days so I've just taken my first promethazine.

I see some people are BFing have you considered stopping? I don't want to but some evenings can't face it.

LikeSilver · 22/07/2014 15:35

8mg a day. The GP said 'ondansetron is expensive but I don't worry myself with expense and nor should you, particularly if it works'. Love that man.

Meerka · 22/07/2014 16:04

likesilver oh, lovely to hear, must be such a relief! What a sensible doctor =) any chance of paying for it privately if need be once the locum has gone?

oh dear trondheim i remember that too, unable to look at the pc and any sort of movement-related stuff on screen was a total no-no. Still can't look at any swooping movement, actually. Hope it improves. How on earth can the hormones affect the middle-ear?!

Regarding bf'ing I am not quite in the same situation ... am a post-grad/survivor of HG so it's a hell of a lot easier for me even if a very low level of nausea/vomming remains. Am grimly trying to get to 6 months, though it's not clicking between the baby and me from the boobie point of view. We do give him a bottle of formula most days just so that I can miss a feed and have a break. Usually in the evenings cause that's the worst time for nausea. Have you thought of mixed breast and bottle?
