I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk/
If you need help in obtaining medication, this phone number is
brilliant:
024 7638 2020

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy#!prescribinginfosub

I would like to thank Everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

lovely to hear boo :)

mary do look at the links above. I find the Pregnancy Sickness Support and the NICE ones are very good. The NICE ones are from the goverment's own best-practice board so they are well worth printing out and taking with you. There's a list of recommended drugs.

Cyclizine ( + B6) are the first line. After that it's often Metoclopromide or Stemetil/buccastem.

At that level of vomitting you really do need some help ... please don't worry about the safety of these drugs in pregnancy. Some have been used for decades and with millions of women. Dehydration is more dangeorus than the meds.

Also it's worth getting the ketostix from the chemist and peeing on them. If they go dark, then your ketones are high which is a sign of dehydratoin (dangerous) or starvation.

Maryj26 · 14/08/2014 12:34

Thanks meerka, doctor checked ketones and he said they were surprisingly ok I think because I manage to eat and then be sick he seemed to say I'm ok for now. Will see what these antihistamines do but not holding out much hope

Emsymarie · 14/08/2014 13:13

Hi everyone, urgh I went out yesterday, had to take dd to opticians as her dad broke her glasses on Monday and didn't do anything about it, just brought her back without them on Tuesday, grrr. Anyway, I was doing quite a bit better but that one outing seems to have set me back massively. I'm in bed fighting the urge to be sick, feel exhausted. Really gutted as was hoping to go back to work on Monday.

Sorry to moan. Hope your meds start to work soon Mary sounds like you're having it very rough.

PunkStar · 14/08/2014 13:31

Hi HGers

Just checking in to say Hi...

For those that don't know me I had my little boy 10 weeks ago now and the HG disappeared pretty pronto after CS :-)
I had HG until the end :-(

I am slightly more sensitive to certain smells still but nothing major.

It does end!!!! Hang in there xx

Emsymarie · 14/08/2014 13:32

Oh one more thing, has anyone found a way to get rid of that awful acidic type taste in their mouth? I'm sure if I could get over that I'd be a new woman!

mrsnec · 14/08/2014 13:41

Congratulations Punk! Emsy, id like to know too but I'm sure I've seen a few people on here say it goes very quickly after the birth.

Meerka · 14/08/2014 13:48

emsy that taste is dreadful isnt it? Im afraid no one's found a way to get rid of it but you can mask it with sucking sweets if you are lucky - mints or barley sugar or something.

Emsymarie · 14/08/2014 13:51

Oh pants. Sweets do take it away briefly but make it worse after the sweet has gone if that makes sense? I read you should fight it with acid type foods, but after a slight 'incident' with oranges last week I'm off those!

Maryj26 · 14/08/2014 14:06

Emsy so sorry to hear your having a bad day, totally awful too if I over do it. The sweet taste at the back of my mouth is horrendous, I just find eating constantly helps, ice lollies, sweets don't help at all though. I have found green apples help for a short time. I am desperate to find a cure as it makes the sickness worse

Oklahoma · 14/08/2014 14:42

Mary I have tried all the drugs and drug combos and found that Avomine worked best for me (as did someone else on this thread, but can't remember who). It is worth trying even if it is an antihistamine as different things work for different people.

Emsy THAT taste. Yep. Nothing to suggest I'm afraid. Tonic water helped me a bit.

Hi Punk glad all is well and thank you for coming back. You give us all hope!

mrsnec · 14/08/2014 15:05

Yes I agree tonic water and sweets here too but I do try to limit those as I can't eat sweets because of a gd scare and can't do low cal ones because of an aversion to artificial sweetner. Apples, melons, bananas and strawberries make me sick but peaches, plums, grapes and apricots all help a bit.

Hope you find some meds that work!

LucindaE · 14/08/2014 16:19

Back, Everyone. Back, just scanned quickly through - Kali how wonderful
you are still out of hospital and actually feeling a bit better and sixteen weeks now, did you say?
Welcome to Allout and I'm shocked about doctor. I hope as others say the links above or phoning the PPS number will get you medication, but I may have missed something and perhaps you have already got it...
Meerka Has been wonderful and everyone supportive to each other as usual. Thanks to Merkaa and much sympathy to anyone finding time endless in the thick of it.

Emsy even now that my sickness has died down I still have the awful taste. Just yuck. Sometimes I can't even work out if I feel nauseous in myself, or if its just the taste making me feel nauseous. I find that it's worse after sweet things too, so I tend to avoid sweet food altogether. Salt & vinegar crisps and spicy food mask it for slightly longer for me (i.e. longer than the duration of just eating the food), but it still comes back within half an hour or so.

Lottiedoubtie · 14/08/2014 17:03

Welcome back lucinda hope you had a good break?

Emsymarie · 14/08/2014 18:59

Thanks for the ideas ladies, will give some of those a try. I'm pinning all my hopes on the fact that having twins means this should be more short lived than you poor ladies are suffering. I'm almost 10 weeks so fingers crossed. Totally awful day today :(

Georgebythesea · 14/08/2014 19:46

Emsy I've had the horrendous bad taste pretty much all the way through(33 weeks now) but I've read it ends earlier for some people so hopefully you will be one of them.I've been through many cycles of things(chewing gum, grapes, crisps, crackers with cheese but find after a few weeks whatever it is stops working. Also i had to keep eating the thing so a grape every 5 mins for example.
I'm at a point now where nothing seems to help except when I eat but straight after it comes back.Lots of people rwc

Georgebythesea · 14/08/2014 19:48

Recommend bicarbonate of soda and water swooped in mouth or lemon in water-didn't work for me really but worth a try! Good luck and let us know if you find a solution!

Emsymarie · 14/08/2014 19:57

Hmm really want some grapes now and OH literally just back from shop! Better not push my luck :)

Meerka · 14/08/2014 20:34

tonic water did help me a bit too. just sipping it constantly. Any other taste in the mouth really.

welcome back lucinda :))

How you doing now george?

Georgebythesea · 14/08/2014 21:21

I'm managing through, still got horrendous taste which drives me crazy and spitting constantly(I'm thinking that will probably carry on until birth now) which causes some nausea but so much better compared to how it was from week 6-20.Still get exhausted very easily(think because I was sick for so long it's taken a while to build myself up again)..ugh and I have a bad back now too so struggling to walk, ugh my body and me have really not liked being pregnant! Roll on meeting our baba in 5-10 weeks! How is everything going with you Meerka And your little one? Hope you are feeling a bit better. And everyone thinking of you all going through this,we can do it!

Georgebythesea · 14/08/2014 21:24

Ps oh and lovely to hear from you Punk I'd been wondering how you were doing. So glad all going well and you are rid of the sickness.Inspiring to hear!

freneticfox · 14/08/2014 21:40

Evening all, joining the hand holding this eve, rubbish day. My GP recommended another week of phased return - just four hours in the morning. Work were NOT impressed and tried to press me to do at least half a week of full days. My GP's letter should be with them by tomorrow in which she explains the severity of my NVP. I hope this keeps them off my back, because a job I once loved is turning into one I am starting to hate.

Got an awful case of 'drippy mouth' tonight; nothing is helping. I went through a phase at about 7-10 weeks where lemon sherbets helped, but I can't bear the taste of them now.

Had a day of many, many tears yesterday. Not so many today, though still feeling a bit defeated.

Lottiedoubtie · 14/08/2014 21:51

Flowers tell work to stick it frenetic there is nothing more important than you and the baby's health, you're doing the right thing.

kalidasa · 14/08/2014 22:19

I too have cycled through a wide range of things for the ghastly taste - sometimes sweets, other times very salty or spicy things. I do find it reduces as the worst of the nausea recedes but to be honest never disappeared completely last time.

I had a pretty good day today and have even managed to spend some time with DS the last couple of days. Such an improvement that I have actually been a bit worried about the baby, which is probably silly given that I can feel the baby a LOT, especially in the evenings, it really seems very wriggly for just 16 weeks.

LucindaE · 15/08/2014 09:46

Kali Great news and what with baby moving, don't worry, be happy.
Punk Lovely to hear from you as always, great encouraging news for current sufferers.
Somesunnysunday Georgebythesea and others. Sympathy about disgusting taste - I'm really sorry that nothing seems to shift it -so obviously barley sugar no good if sweet things can triggerf it.
Freneticfox You poor thing, I'm so angry about work behaving in this way.
emysmarie Sorry about horrible day - and I do so hope it starts to ease soon.
Lottie Thanks.
Meerka I hope you are fine and have been looking after yourself as well as baby, family and everyone on this thread and not forcing yourself to breast feed anymore, missed any further posts on that...
Apologies to anyone rudely overlooked.
xx
