Everywhere ive read or people ive spoken to have said that the baby kicks you high in the ribs. Im 32 weeks pregnant and the midwife has said that the babies head is down but yet ive not experienced any kicks high up.
All the kicks I get seem to be over on either side of my stomach or I get kicks/punches really low down above my thigh.

Anyone else this far along and not had any kicks in the ribs. Even the pictures of babies in the womb all show them with their feet touching the top of the uterus.

I never felt this on either pregnancies.

littlerach · 28/03/2004 17:15

Their legs are curled round, aren't they, so I guess the kicks would still be lower down. I remember finding it harder to breathe, but that was sheer size!!!

Kbaby I am 33 weeks now and have identical kicking pattern to yours. At first I thought it just had busy hands (awww) but completely readjusted my inside uterus picture after seeing poster at ante natal class showing baby in vertex position where legs as littlerach suggests are curled over so that the actual feet are lower than top of uterus. Illustrators in pregnancy books obviously find this hard to draw as I've seen no other convincing legs positions either touching top or side but those kicks I reckon are more descriptive anyway!

I am 37 weeks and have exactly the same kicking pattern you describe Kbaby. Sometimes my baby is transverse, sometimes oblique. Doesn't seem to have a settled position yet

My first baby used to stretch out her feet and dig them under my ribs and it was not fun, quite uncomfortable. But it wasn't all the time just now and again.

This pregnancy I've not had the same feelings so far. Im 33 weeks +4 days and every now and then there is a hard lump under my rib and I can't decide if it's a head or a bum. And occasionally there seems to be something maybe a leg or arm stretching up the way into my ribs but doesn't stay there very long.

Like Lesley most of my kicks have been at the sides, and like you I also get a lot of kicks and punches down low near my thighs. I was at the dr at 31 weeks and she told me that the baby was head down but i'm not to sure because of where the kicks are, I guess it's still bobbing about trying to decide where it wants to be.

Lesley if you read this, what position is Oblique? I've not heard of that one.

1st pregnancy, no rib kicks at all, 2nd loads (as linnet describes, under ribs), quite a shock and not very comfy.

Much better without IME!!

Linnet - neither had I but that's what the dr said when i was at the hospital last week.Basically its across the way but squinty!Head down towards the top of the thigh, not into pelvis, bum in the middle but to one side of tummy , feet right over at the side ( where my waist used to be!!!)

I found the kicks in the thigh really weird - it felt like I was carrying the baby in my leg not in my belly......

Doctor said its unusual for the baby to change position after the end of the 36th week. I'm in my 37th week and the baby changes position several times a day.. I have no idea what to make of this. Although other mums say I'm small for 37 weeeks , all my measurements and scans have been fine, but i do wonder if baby is small. Otherwise how come he still has so much room to manovere?

BTW glad to hear your baby is Ok and you're reassured after the scans

I heard a midwife say that the position of the placenta can affect how you feel the kicks - you may not feel anything if the baby kicks the placenta.

Blackduck · 29/03/2004 15:08

Never had rib kicks - carried low I think...used to kick on the right side mainly.....

suedonim · 29/03/2004 15:30

I had agonising ribkicks with two of my pg's. It really felt as if the ribs were riding up over each other and the pain was a burning one, like I was on fire. Both those babies were in a posterior position so I concluded that was why I felt the kicks in the front.

Btw, Lesley, my last baby changed position constantly, even while I was in late labour!! She's been a livewire ever since, too.

I have never had rib kicks, either (3 pregnancies). DS's feet stuck straight out of my right side for 2 months, though, which was pretty unmissable. Could almost count his toes.
Apparently my brothers (twins) kicked so much my poor mother thought she had bruised ribs, though. Maybe it depends how the uterus is sitting, or how you're built? I am tall but have short legs (very long torso) whereas my mum was short -- all legs and little room for her tummy.
