Hi I was told by my consultant that after having a prem baby the chance is 15% of having another prem baby, and 30% chance after having two. Having said that I've had three all born at 35 weeks. No idea about incompetent cervixes though

Me23 · 20/06/2014 16:12

Are you not being monitored by a consultant? Ideally you should be seen early and have cervical length checked to check for incompetent cervix. Have you had your booking appt with the mw? Did you ask them what their protocol is?

time2deal · 20/06/2014 16:13

IC tends to show up around 19-20 weeks. Prior to that the uterus isn't fully expanded so there isn't pressure on the cervix just yet.
(The lower uterine segment stays closed until around then. Sometimes mistakenly measured as part of the cervix).

On the flip side, I don't think IC ladies normally make it to 28 weeks so it could have been another reason. Did they check for infection?

BUT - I'm no expert. IC is a complex area, and hard to diagnose. Best you chat to your doctors.

I had my first baby at 33 weeks and was really worried all through my second pregnancy, but she came right on time a day after a her due date. I still have no idea why one was early and not the other.

Mummywithlove · 20/06/2014 16:38

I saw the midwife last week and all they said is that I might need to see a consultant around 20 odd weeks!! but I AM PROPER scared I will have another prem...! im 15 weeks preg btw... I haven't got an appointment till july.... but the reason I mentioned an incompetent cervix is basically when I urine I do get a bit of pressure down there.... about getting checked for a incompetent cervix do I see a doctor or do I see midwife??
I am just so scared....... :/ xx

You can have an incompetent cervix at 15/40 and you would have a cervical suture put in for that.
The pressure your feeling may be prolapse... Make sure you're doing your pelvic floor.
Surprised you aren't seeing a consultant yet. They would look at why you had a preterm baby last time.. Infection tends not to be reoccurring.
If you are worried, call your midwife team and see what they suggest

Mummywithlove · 20/06/2014 16:48

sorry whats prolapse?? xx

They've never looked into why I've had a preterm labour and I've had 3 of them. Unless it's just because I make it past the terrifying dangerous stage.

Hey Mummywithlove,

Was about to start a thread about being worried about having a prem and saw your post.

I'll introduce myself a bit. I had my LG at 25 weeks after PPROM, no explanation exactly although a few possibilities. No signs of IC. She spent 6 months on NICU.

Waters broke at 24+5, infection so had to be induced 2 days later.

You absolutely need to be seen by a consultant. I'm pregnant with no.2 due Feb 3rd. When are you due? They will see me every 2 weeks, give progestrone shots from 12 weeks and steroids from 24 weeks to help strengthen babies lungs. As others have said you're 15% more likely. And other first time mums are 5% likely. On the bright side.. this means you and I are 75% likely to have a chubby lovely little chunk :-).

More than anything, i just wanted to let you know im here and in your boat and need reassurance too. Im not sure what reassurance i need as i know the facts but i'm struggling, i dont feel attached or worried like i did with my first from early on. I feel in denial to protect my family. Im hoping when i see on first scan that will change.

Sending my love and am here if you need support (if i can offer any) xxxxxx

A prolapse is when an internal organ protrudes down, so uterus, vaginal walls, cervix etc.
progesterone injections are not routine, neither are steroids at 24/40.
If you have a preterm birth, you have swabs taken, usually vaginal plus placental, urine samples sent and also placenta gets sent off to be tested to see if it's infection related. They are usually looked at for future pregnancies to see if there is anything that can be done to avoid it happening again.
Incompetent cervix is normally treated by suture, progesterone pessaries and rest.

I hope I have a chubby lovely little chunk lol,, Im just so scared, constantly checking myself, as I have had 3 MC's aswel,
my first baby was fine had him a day before his due date, he's a little chunky monkey now lol. but my second.... well.... my waters broke at 25weeks and had to stay in hospital in case of infections or going into labour I has 2 steroids injections for babies lungs, I went into labour at 28weeks, doc said I didn't have an infection or any thing, just early labour... she was in NICU for 3 months with breathing probs and lung probs... and heart probs...ect....! with an unexplained reason why she came early???
I went to midwifes yesterday for bloods to be taken and I asked her whats the likelihood of me having another prem,, she said "HIGH" which now is making me more on edge... I haven't had any swaps or test's, and I haven't been checked for an incompetent cervix?? what do I do as I am petrified!!!!! Help :) xx

You really need to be seen by a consultant. It's normally a trigger for a referral.
When you have your 20/40 scan the sonographer will measure the length of your cervix, if it is below a certain length they would look at cervical suture

Mummywithlove · 25/06/2014 11:40

oh right my midwife said if I haven't heard off a consultant by the time I had my 20weeks scan they will refer me....? do I have a HIGH chance of having another prem even tho I had an unexplained early delivery ??
