Progesterone Shot in early pregnancy??

Hi there,

I'm 5 weeks pregnant with #1. I had a mc at 6 weeks two months ago and my doctor advised me that when I get pregnant again to get a progesterone shot. I woke up to some blood on my underwear this morning (sorry tmi). Just wondering if anyone has had a progesterone treatment in early pregnancy before?

Thanks

Hello, its standard practice to do this for IVF, but most people seem to use pessaries rather than injections I think (although some specific clinics do still prefer the injection from what I've read). I used the pessaries right up to 32 weeks in my pregnancy. Good luck, I have everything crossed for you xx

I had IVF and was on progesterone (pessaries) from egg collection (equivalent to ovulation) until 12 weeks).

Are you in the UK? Progesterone isn't usually given as a treatment for miscarriage after one loss, and only in some specific cases of repeat loss (to build up the uterus lining). In these cases it is given as a pessary daily in the first trimester or longer.
However even if it is extra to requirements it is completely harmless so go ahead and take it!

After one miscarriage, your risk of a repeat loss (even without treatment) is no higher than anyone else's: they are usually (in 90+% of cases) spontanious losses with no one cause and won't happen again.

Bleeding can be very scary after a loss. Do see your doctor or midwife about this but again in many cases it is nothing to worry about.

Thanks ladies. I'm actually in Ireland and my own doc is away at the moment. I've had no more bleeding so hopefully that's it.
I haven't heard of the pessaries before. Must do some research.
Thanks so much

I took progesterone tablets from 6 weeks after some bleeding to strengthen the uterus. The research I read suggested that it doesn't make a vast difference but psychologically it made me feel better. It certainly doesn't do any harm. The bleeding stopped and now baby a healthy 25 weeks!

Ah, happy news. Thanks Porcito!
