maternity belts - any good?

Ok any tips on whether a maternity belt is worth getting to support my stomach muscles (and back, but fewer problems there)? Am 6 months and bump pretty big + uncomfortable almost all the time. Feels like my stomach can't cope with it this size and I've got 3 months to go. Help! Anyone out there with any tips? I can't keep walking around holding up my bump myself - am getting v strange looks! Are maternity belts worth getting and if so, which ones would people recommend. Really grateful for any ideas as am feeling fed up and v uncomfortable.

I've found one very useful - have been using it since about 6.5 months, and I can definitely walk further with it on - and funnily enough it also helps me sleep better (I do take it off at night!) because my stomach muscles don't ache every time I turn over.

Mine is this kind - although not as big. Mine was passed on from a friend, so can't recommend where to get them or what kind other than that this one works for me!

Thanks for this, will have a look out for one. Anything that makes me feel more comfortable (and less grumpy!)

I used one during pregnancies and still use it now sometimes for a chronic back problem.

It provides a nice tightish support band for my lower back. Got it from Mothercare.

How much do they cost please?

gingernut · 06/09/2006 20:04

I bought one similar to this which was great and really helped support the weight of my bump as I walked. I also had one from the physio but I didn't get on with it at all.

emmatom · 06/09/2006 22:29

Mine was about £10.

Thanks everyone, I am sadly excited about finding something (anything!) that makes this whole pregnancy malarky less uncomfortable. Is anyone finding it harder second time around? I seem to have grown huge v fast this time around, can't believe I've still got 3 months to go. It gets me down sometimes....

I think you can get them from about £15-£30 online depending on the outlet. I was huge and while I didn't have any back pain, the support the belt gave made me more comfortable generally and more able to move around in the daytime.

Maternity support belts are a godsend - try buying one online (various sizes) at www.mamatoto.co.uk - quote reference NB2AH680 for free postage and packing (add more to your order to take full advantage of this!)

nips · 11/09/2006 11:17

Forgot to say that they are only £10 so with free p&p at the moment a real bargain!

LittleB · 11/09/2006 13:20

I suffered from back ache from about 6 1/2 months so my doctor referred me to a physio who loaned me a belly belt for the rest of my pregnancy. it helped alot and was free, might be worth seeing if you can borrow one too.

I'm feeling quite mean with money (and not in during the day to receive mailorder/not anywhere near any maternity shops).

Would a sarong wrapped below the bump do the same thing?

tweedledum · 11/09/2006 15:38

Thanks for the free p+p code Nips! Have just ordered a belt. And has anyone checked out the really nice suit-style jacket at M+S Maternity (online). It's actually really stylish (not a word I normally associate with ole M+S), though will have to see what it's like when it arrives. I couldn't resist ordering it, on the basis that I need a winter jacket, so its not that extravagent.....

Has anyone tired the 'belly bra's' that bump to 3 sell?

tweedledum · 13/09/2006 09:48

no - I hated the name so didn't try it! I now have my Mamatoto one that Nips recommended and it's great, really helps. A word of warning though, when you are wearing it you can't feel if your skirt starts to fall down, as mine did on the way to work today.....!

LOL'd at the thought of your skirt falling down! Glad the support belt helped though!

LaRusse · 16/09/2006 22:20

Hi all. Read all advice attentively - thanks for sharing. Just few questions... I am at 4 months. When is it good to start wearing maternity support belts? What belts are best - so called full or just support under belly would be good enough? And how do you determine the right size?! Confusing!

nips · 17/09/2006 13:18

Support belts are there for whenever you need them although most are used int he later stages of pregnancy. You buy your pre pregnant size as they come in 10/12 14/16 18/20 or 22+ The ones im refering to are just under the bump, I found them less restricting!
Look at that website mentioned in my previous post and remember to quote the discount code for free p&p
The belly belts are also good at your stage of pregnancy as they will save you a fortune on maternity clothes!
