Got results today and the doctor said google all you want but jut don't call me 100 times to ask me about this.

Even though he weighs 3 pounds, he in in 40th percentile in growth:

Measurements are:

  1. biparietal diametter: 7.3 cm (29 Weeks) (9th percentile)
  2. Head circumference: 28cm (30 weeks)
  3. Adbdominal circumference 25.5cm (29 weeks)
  4. Femur length 5.3cm (28 weeks) (3rd percentile)

Weight 1364grams

Very concerned. Please post your thoughts or comments on this. Anything that can be done (exercise, foods, etc)?

How many weeks are you? And any indication of a problem?

yellowrose2728 · 18/06/2014 00:43

Btw your dr sounds like a dick Confused

Boudica1990 · 18/06/2014 00:53

Huh I'm confused, I just looked at my measurments for 28+3 and they are

BPD: 7.1
HC: 27
FL: 5.2

I was told these were normal...I don't understand.

newbaby2014 · 18/06/2014 00:55

Into Week 30 I believe… The doctor said everything is fine for now but i don't think he knows what he is talking about. Measurements 1 and 4 below are in the low percentile which when doing research suggests down syndrome, but could be jumping to conclusions and just concerned.

  1. biparietal diametter: 7.3 cm (29 Weeks) (9th percentile)
  2. Head circumference: 28cm (30 weeks)
  3. Adbdominal circumference 25.5cm (29 weeks)
  4. Femur length 5.3cm (28 weeks) (3rd percentile)

Please help and let me know your thoughts and if its something to worry about.

My 31+4 measurements are

BPD: 7.8cm
HC: 29.8cm
AC: 27.7cm
FL: 5.9cm

All are within the normal ranges on my graph, DO NOT GOOGLE small femurs big head that's where your getting the down syndrome info from. No consultant has raised concern over my babies measurements and there not far off yours.

If there was a problem or issue they would let you know. I've just plotted your measurements on my maternity notes and they are all in the "grey" normal range

Observer78 · 18/06/2014 01:06

Don't know about sizes but have been in a hairy situation where there was a growth restriction risk (sort of a problem in reverse perhaps?).
My dopplers were measured and were waaaaaaay off the scale (high resistance to placental blood flow, in Layman's terms - baby could be in deep trouble due to nutrients etc deficiency). So the question is - have your dopplers been measured? IF there's any issue with the blood flow - a simple dose of baby aspirin could help on a grand scale, but don't start taking it on your own accord, as it could be nothing to do with it!

Now that's the horror story out of the way, let's go to the simple explanation - baby might be petite, that's all. Depends on the genetics.

I have been lying on my left hand side since the early days as that's the most efficient way (apparently) of ensuring a good blood flow to the baby. Oh! And (apparently) drinking lots of water helps get nutrients to your little one too!

Boudica1990 · 18/06/2014 01:13

Babies all grow at different rates, all my 20week measurements were small, just dropping out if the normal range by week 28 baby was fine. Try not to worry they have spurts and growth patterns unique to them. You might just have a small baby that's all.

I'm.only small 160cm so I'm not expecting a giant baby to cone out of me so please don't worry.

My son had a femur length on 20 th percentile and head on 90th. He is now 3.5 yrs old and has short legs and a big head. Dp is 5 foot 8 and I am 5 foot 1. It figures! He isn't actually short for his age. Just has short legs. Please dont worry it sounds like your doctor has no bedside manner at all but your baby is fine.

FrauEnglischLehrerin · 18/06/2014 09:07

I had lots of scans with dd (for fun, sonographer was a family friend) and every time he measured her femur length, the computer flashed up an "abnormal" message. The sonographer would just remeasure a bit more generously and the message went away.

At 31+4 her bpd was 7.5 and femur 5.8 if that helps.

Dd is now 5 and, like ch1a's ds, has short legs and a biggish head and has no special needs. She has always been about 3rd percentile for height, which she isn't particularly happy about, but which has never concerned any medical professional she has seen.

Sleepwhenidie · 18/06/2014 10:44

I had similar experiences with both my ds's, ds1 sounds most like your baby OP. He was generally 9th centile but short femurs (3rd centile). We were referred at 24wks to the specialist Fetal medicine unit where they managed to transpose his arm measurements from 32mm to 23 (both arms!!) and so told us there was a high risk of downs - because of both arms and legs being small. Luckily we got a second opinion from private consultant (the Fetal Medicine Centre on Harley St, amazing) who reassured us things should all be fine and they were-Ds1 was born on 9th centile with little legs but is now almost 9yo, very leggy and around 30th centile I would guess. Please try not to worry but I agree your doctor sounds awful.

Pobblewhohasnotoes · 18/06/2014 10:59

My DS had short femurs and big head on scan, he's now two and fine. I'm short so I think he just takes after me.

ch1a · 18/06/2014 11:41

For us all it means is turn ups on trousers and larger hats! Visually you can't really tell about either!

newbaby2014 · 18/06/2014 17:02

Thanks everyone. I really appreciate all your feedback, it definately has been helpful. Will try to be positive but just hard not to let your mind wander elsewhere.

I think if we decide to have another child I will opt for a midwife.

Where in the country are you OP? Could you get a private wellbeing scan to put your mind at rest? Ours cost about £150 on Harley St...

FrauEnglischLehrerin · 19/06/2014 09:48

I wonder if that dr doesn't say the same thing to every patient he gives results to. Unless you get 50th percentile for every measurement then you can probably find something to worry about by googling/comparing with friends. He's probably had a fair few calls from panicking women who he considers to have given completely normal scan results to.

Someone probably ought to let him know that the Dr House act isn't that funny in real life and that saying "your baby is developing just fine, don't google the scan measurements as you might just end up scaring yourself unnecessarily" might be less open to misinterpretation.

hmatz81 · 09/04/2015 20:46

i am pregnant with my first baby, and my doctor has been monitoring the growth of baby...i'm 33wks2days...and baby is doing good and healthy but the measurements they are watching.

BPD: 8.6cm
HC: 30.7cm
AC: 27.8cm
FL(femur): 5.9

I am very worried about these, i cry everyday about it. If someone could give me some good advice or just words, I would greatly appreciate it...
