Flax seeds (linseeds)

I usually have a spoon of flax seeds every morning, soaked in water or ground up, for the omega-3 oils and also the roughage. I never get constipated and there are lots of nutritionists etc who say it is very good for you. However, the evidence about taking this while pregnant is extremely confusing. (I am 5 weeks pg). Some seem to say this is a very good source of omega-3's and highly recommend it during pregnancy. But there are a few internet sites that report that it is not advised during pregnancy, because of hormonal effects. I'm confused now.

Anyone else got any thoughts or experiences?

I think I will avoid it at least at the moment, given the uncertainty (have a history of m/c's and am anxious anyway). I've bought some Mumomega capsules instead. I'll also have to eat more fibre in other forms!

PS I was particularly worried about what I read on this page (about halfway down, under Pregnancy heading)

Oh, I've been taking a flax seed tab every day, now 22 weeks. I bought a general omega oil which I returned as it had borage (starflower) in it and I knew that affected hormones but the health food shop said flax was completely harmless and very good for you, might have to look this up...

i accidentally bought some flaxseed bread the other day, it was revolting, tasted of rotten fish. uggh.

Have done more internet research about this and the most frequent advice overall appears to be in the negative. I wouldn't take the chnace and stop will definitely stop using it.

Yes, sigh, something else I'll put on the shelf, and hope I haven't turned baby into a hormonal wreck!

I've been taking flaxseed capsules for years, too many fishies being killed for my liking, and am due my baby in the next 2 weeks - everything seems fine so far! Had never heard it wasn't recommended until now. As far as I was concerned they are essential fats needed for brain, nerve, joint and skin formation.
