Was anyone else nervous about telling people?

Hi all,

I'm eight weeks pregnant, after me and my partner of nearly 10 years decided to stop using contraception a few months ago. I'm a bit shocked it happened so quickly! I'm now eight weeks pregnant. Nobody knew we were trying and am feeling really nervous about telling people!

I think people will be happy for us (although surprised) but I'm quite a private person and don't really like to be the centre of attention. I'm also worried about people suddenly only talking to be about pregnancy and babies, and forgetting about me!

My partner told his parents on the phone this week (they live a long distance away so we couldn't visit) and I'm planning on telling mine today but I just feel so nervous!

Did anyone else feel like this?!

I feel the same, I'm 13 weeks and only parents know, I'm nervous to tell people! I think they'll be fine though and I'll probably just come out with it. I won't be making any big announcements on Facebook and will only tell close colleagues at work, others will just find out when it becomes obvious!

I felt nervous every time. I thought people would disapprove or think I should be worried about my job or the fact that DS1 has autism.

In reality, everyone has been very pleased of course. At least they are to my face ...

There are still some people I haven't told and I'm 34 weeks! (Obviously people I haven't seen in a while, I think they'd guess if they saw me)

I think just waiting till I get bigger and letting people work it out for themselves is the method most people will have to find out (bar family, close friends and work colleagues).

I told close people early, but didn't tell work colleagues etc till after 20 weeks. I just felt really vulnerable about it.

Yep I was nervous about telling people with this one as I've not long had a baby and it will be my fourth, I've had a few looks of disapproval from the mums at the school but all my close family were really good about it. It will be fine just tell them, the longer you leave it the more nervous you become. You could always tell and run lol.

Glad I'm not the only one !! I'm 13 weeks and now that we had scan yesterday and all was good we decided to tell family my partner told his mom, sister as they are here for the weekend so I decided to tell my mom over the phone the same day she cried ( happy cry) then I told my brother and nan, also told my work supervisor and two close friends , that's all I'm telling manager on Monday which I'm nervous about , I kno it's silly but part of me thinks as it's been a secret so long telling people makes me feel abit vulnerable , you aren't alone! But it's lovely news to share

You don't have to do the whole 'big announcement' thing, on Facebook and everything. Some women like to be made a fuss of in pregnancy (I was a bit like that with my first) but others like you want to maintain your own persona. And it does get quite wearing when everyone only wants to talk to you about bump and forgets that you're the same person!

Wait til about 15 weeks before mentioning it at work, no need to think about it now.

I was so scared about telling my parents i made DH do it! I'm still not sure why i was so scared! I just felt like a naughty teenager - despite being 26, married, in a stable job and a homeowner!
I was terrified of telling work as hadnt been in my job that long.
All the worry was for nothing as everyone has been happy and supportive!
Just tell people as and when you are ready - there's no rush. And no need to do a "big announcement".

Sparkle, that's what scares me - people staring at my belly to see how big I am.

Well, encouraged by you lot I just told my parents. My mom is really happy, and already looking forward to 'granny days' hanging out with her friends and their grandchildren. My stepdad was a bit shocked, but he had three children by my age and my younger stepsister already has three children! I think he still thinks of me as being a kid even though I'm grown up with a mortgage.

It's made me a bit more excited!

Yeah sort of. We didn't tell parents until 15 weeks, then work colleagues around 18 weeks, and even now at 24 weeks some friends don't know.

I'm old, and I think it had been assumed I'd not have children. Probably by me too! My parents were incredibly surprised.

I haven't told work properly, and I'm 20 weeks. I won't be doing a FB announcement or anything. I think it's private. It was a hard road to get to this point and although I'm quite far along, having had to "untell" people before, the fewer people that know the better as far as I'm concerned!

Yep, I was! Its a funny one, there are some people it's lovely to tell and some people who don't think it's particularly good news. Dh and I have been married nearly 5 years and have been asked fairly constantly since then, when we're having babies... Now that we are, people assume it's an accident!! I've also found I don't like making announcements, and it's not a very easy topic to drop into conversation is it?

Yes. Found it v tricky, embarrassing and slo slightly like I might be tempting date! We've only just told people (including family) at 16 weeks and there will be no Facebook announcement!

I just told family and left everyone else until it was obvious. You don't need to make an 'announcement'. Congratulations :)

I felt exactly the same, I'm not keen on being centre of attention so have got really nervous telling people. Have found it all a bit stressful if I'm honest.

Took me completely by surprise, I'd always imagined I'd have been excited not nervous!
