CVS Tomorrow, scared.

Hi!
I had a NT today and my baby's NT is 8,3 mm, which is big. I was given many options and my husband and me decided to go for a CVS, which will be done tomorrow. I am scared. I had a miscarriage in January... I think 8,3 is a big size, still feel hope but want to be realistic.

Hi I had a CVS in April as my partner and I carry a genetic condition, my son inherited, we wasn't aware we carried it before he was born.

I can't say it's pleasant, I just laid there didn't look and tried to breath through it, after wards I almost fainted had some coke and biscuits and was ok after so bring something with you (although this is an unusual reaction)

My results were good, it will be worth it for peace of mind, I hope you get good results, good luck xx

I was also scared of miscarriage the risk is very small and they will go through everything with you we saw a nurse first then a consultant they made me feel at ease x

I had CVS with ds in 2012 as our NT was 6mm.

Its very emotional, it was more emotionally upsetting than physically upsetting, my dp was my rock throughout it.

Definitely pack a little snack or two for afterwards and don't rush off anywhere, sit and try and relax before heading home.

Fortunately we got the results after 2 days, and thankfully our ds was absolutely fine.

It's also worth remembering that the statistics the CVS risk is based on are over 30 years old and it is arguable that improved technique and greater expertise in carrying out the procedure in the intervening years is not accounted for in those numbers.

At my hospital they emphasised the fact that they have to tell you the standard miscarriage risk stats but that 'things have progressed' since the original studies were done, just like vivipru says.

Exactly like others have said, it's not painful so much as a bit uncomfortable, and it's all done in a few minutes. It does feel sort of strange and coupled with the fact you just don't want to be there or having to do it makes it seem worse, if you see what I mean - like sisterelephant says it's more the emotional baggage attached to the procedure rather than the procedure itself that is unpleasant.

You may feel a bit sore/bruised/crampy in the area afterwards and for a couple of days, which is normal, although contact your hospital if you are worried about how you are feeling as they want to be wary for any signs of infection (rare though that is).

I had a CVS in April when I was 15 weeks and it was fine. It's a strange sensation, to me it felt like a smear test, but it wasn't painful and it was over very quickly. I was also told that the miscarriage risk is much smaller than the officially stated one, and the procedure will likely be performed by someone very experienced.

Results were back in 3 days for me, and all was well. Keep my fingers crossed for you. You might also want to post on the Antenatal Tests and Choices page, people there were very reassuring and knowledgeable and really helped with the stress and worry.

The test itself was successful and it wasn't painful. They were very supportive and explained everything to us very carefully, which was helpful. However, the scan they made first in detail showed my baby has many problems and it's likely that it has Edward's syndrome. They said that even if the results come negative, baby has heart and brain problems. I just cried and cried feeling sorry for my little one, who looked so defenseless. We will wait the results but we are preparing for the worst.
