Spina bifida at 19 week scan. Please help

I had a scan yesterday which showed my baby has something wrong with the bottom of his spine.

The sonographer seemed sure its spina bifida but i can't be seen my a doctor/fetal specialist until Monday.

Does anyone know of cases where a second scan has shown something different? She seemed sure my scan on Monday would show the same thing.

Feel lost

It was many years ago so technology wasn't as advanced, but the doctors were sure my little sister had spina bifida and she was OK. I'm sorry you're going through this. x

I didn't think sonographers were qualified to make those judgements, or tell you if they thought they saw something like that? I thought it had to be someone more senior who had that discussion with you.
However, wait until you've seen the proper person on Monday and hopefully they'll be able to guide you better.

((hugs))

Good luck for Monday. I know waiting over the weekend will be really tough but the reason you have to wait is because only the specialist can give you real info so try not to speculate.

It is certainly the case that a second scan can show something different - ultrasound isn't like a photograph and if the baby is in a different position you can see better details.

Yes, this happened to someone I know and it was all fine, no spina bifida. It was about 5 years ago now, and she was told her baby would likely never walk. He was born perfect Smile

Thinking of you today and hoping all goes well.
