Pregnant with Ulcerative Colitis / Proctitis...struggling!

Hi,

I am currently 15+2 and my proctitis is flaring up. I am currently not on any medication and had been managing to control it largely through gluten and dairy free diet.

However, I am getting a lot of pain and cramping low down and it really freaks me out due to having a cerclage (cervical stitch) after a late miscarriage.

I find it so hard to distinguish where the pains are coming from, and am constantly struggling from either constipation or at the other end of the scale, 3/4 BM a day (which I know is mild compared to many!).

I saw a gastro a few weeks ago and they weren't keen to do / prescribe anything whilst I am pregnant. I was just wondering if anyone else was struggling with something similar and I am wondering how you control it?

Hi , I am 28 weeks pregnant and am currently keeping my UC under control with Mezazaline SUppoitories which I use every 3 to 5 days . So far , it is grumbling along nicely.

However in my first pregnancy I had a total flare up , which caused a great deal of pain , which ended up in a visit to A&E. I eventually got it back under control by using a steroid enema called predzone.
I gave birth to a gorgeous baby girl who is now 7.
I just wanted to share my experience with you.
Good luck , you will be fine.

Thank you for sharing. I am at the point now where I think medicating is the only way forwards, for pain relief but also for my mental health! I have asked for another gastro appointment, so hopefully I can be seen quite soon.

I have UC and take Asacol. I was fine for ages but at around 24 weeks I started to flare up and it got bad quite quickly. My gastro put me on steroids and they have done the trick but it took a few weeks. I'm tapering now but I may have to take them for the rest of the pregnancy.

If it wasn't for the steroids I'd be housebound and seriously ill by now. Baby seems fine too.

I have ulcerative proctitis. 24 weeks Pregnant with babies 2&3. Not had any probs this pregnancy so farand have pretty much been in remission for 2 1/2 years but in my last pregnancy I did have a really bad flare. I resisted the medication but my gastro was pretty comfortable with giving me predsol suppositories and said it would be better for the baby for me to medicate than to get a worse flare up. It did ease on its own but thought this might reassure you. In retrospect I should have medicated as I had a dreadful flare up after having my dd and it is not fun to be breastfeeding in the middle of a bad flare. Mine is now controllable by probiotics but when I was younger I couldn't tolerate any medication for it, it all made my symptoms worse. I ended up on azathiroprine and then back and forth on courses of prednisolone.
