To early scan or not to early scan???

So after much agonising about it, and dp just saying I should do whatever makes me happy (being utterly lovely, but no help at all, lol) I'm opening it up to the public forum.

I will be 8 weeks on Friday. Haven't seen a midwife yet, although have been assured the referral has been sent through by my GP, so should hear back from them soon. This is my first dc.

The dilemma is, I go on holiday on 21st June for 2 weeks, when I will be just 11 weeks, so I think too early for a dating scan to be done - have no problem with it being done when I get back at 14 weeks, BUT, I am going on holiday with my family (dm,df & 2 ds) and would really love to have something to take with me to show them and tell them while I am there, as they all live in a different country from me, and I am unlikely to see them again before dc arrives. The only thing stopping me is the cost involved, as obvs it would be private & would it really be worth it.

Any thoughts??

PS sorry for the long post.. it got away with me a little :-)

If you ca an afford it I definitely would if I was in your situation xx

I would get a scan - you will see a (small) baby with head arms legs body and a heartbeat.

My 8 week scan is so cute - it's one of my favourites!

kalidasa · 28/05/2014 14:35

I had loads of scans because I had a complicated pregnancy and I agree, the 8 week one was one of the nicest actually. If you can afford it I think I would. It would be reassuring too - if all looks well at 8 weeks the chances of anything going wrong drop a lot.

I would probably go for an early scan in your situation. I would also ask whether they could do it on the NHS. This probably depends a lot on where you live and on how busy maternity services are, but in our rural area the small local hospital have been really nice about giving me extra early scans on request.

Do it!

Trooperslane · 28/05/2014 14:40

Go for it Grin

As a matter of interest how much does it cost (roughly) for a private scan? Enjoy your holiday Tams1uk!

ChubbyKitty · 28/05/2014 15:15

Is definitely do it in your situation! Enjoy your holiday and congratulations on your pregnancySmile

I had an 8 week scan and found it very reassuring. I think you can have your dating scan at 11 weeks but you might have to go private to make sure it happens exactly then. There is also a short window for the NT test (I believe before 14weeks?) so I would check that out too if I were you. Plus by 14 weeks some people might have guessed!

alwaysblonde · 28/05/2014 15:25

My private scan was £80 I think and I had it at 10 weeks.

You can get some scans for £40 but the early scans are more expensive. This is probably because they know we get desperate.

tams1uk · 28/05/2014 15:42

Thanks, ladies!! I've got it all booked in for the 8th :-D When I'll be just over 9 weeks, eep!!! So excited now!! The scan is costing me £99, but like PP says, they can vary in cost quite a bit. I think because I'm having it before the 10 week period, its a bit more expensive.

Good luck everyone xx
