Discharge or mucus plug

Hi all

I'm just over 18 weeks and ended up with a hospital visit this morning!

Last night I had quite a big bit of stringy mucus like discharge which I was concerned was my mucus plug. I've had 2 d&c in the past so am slightly more paranoid although my last pregnancy was normal and carried full term.

The midwife checked my cervix during an internal and said it was closed and sent me home.

I'd had sex with my husband the night before so not sure if this is related.

Does anyone have any experience of anything similar?

How much was there and what did it look like?
I've had that ovulation sort of goo a few times where it's as much as a fingertip and white or clear.
Mucus plug was massively different. It was the same sort of texture but loads of it and browny/red. You'd definitely notice it as being something different!

I had something similar around the 20 week mark. It was a creamy colour, definitely no blood in there and was very stringy and sticky. I'm currently 38+3 so it was nothing to worry about. I'm sure it will be the same for you if you've been checked and given the all clear x

Hi thanks both. It was maybe about an inch to an inch and a half long and whitish. It was like discharge and I certainly remember having stringy discharge like it before but maybe not as much. It was probably exactly 24 hours after sex. The midwife said but cervix was closed today. Would it be open if it had been my mucous plug?

From what I've read the mucous plug is quite sizeable and can come out of several days. If your cervix was closed and there was no blood then I think it is safe to assume it's heavy discharge. Over the past few months I've been so wet from discharge I thought I'd wet myself on numerous occasions and then it would be stringy and jelly like. All normal apparently x

My mucous plug was very very obvious.
It was a bit like a big thick lump of jello (i am not kidding) There is no way I could have mistaken mine for anything else. I had stringy discharge all the way through my pregnancy but the plug was completely different.
If you really want an idea of what it could look like google it and check out the images (its gross but i wanted to know what to look out for)

2 ERPC shouldn't make a difference - especially if you have had a child after that. If damage was done it would have been noted last pregnancy.

FWIW at 18 weeks or so my cm ramped up a bit! Could be that? Other posters have mentioned it as well.
If they have checked and the cervix is closed, that sounds good news. And probably more definitive than forum anecdotes.

It's so hard to know!

When I googled pictures some of it does seem like what came out albeit I didn't have as much!

Is it true that mucus plugs can be lost early and regenerate

It's very common after an internal examination for the mucus plug, or parts of it, to come away. That is what hospital told me when I called. I had the same thing except I am 39 weeks so view any kind of potential labour action as exciting!

I had a goop of brown creamy mucus and have now been steadily losing it over the last four days. It's very creamy in colour and is just like jelly.

It does also regenerate as such if you are earlier on in your pregnancy so I wouldn't worry.

RoseberryTopping · 28/05/2014 07:45

I know what you mean, some of the google pictures look a bit like what I'd lose when not pregnant Confused

I'd really try not to worry though, your cervix is closed and you're not getting any pains are you?

Mummytono2 · 28/05/2014 07:51

No pains etc no nothing else really. Nothing else since Monday evening yesterday.

If it was sex that caused it would it really have taken 24 hours?
