Incompetent cervix / cervical stitch - any experience of this?

Hi there

I'm 32+1 weeks. At around 23 weeks I went for a scan with the consultant and he discovered that I was around 3cm dilated. He disagnosed me with an incompetent cervix and I had an emergency operation the same day to insert a stitch to stop me going into labour. Luckily since then everything has been ok.

I'm due to have the stitch taken out at 37 weeks (the day before my birthday!) and was just wondering whether anyone else had been diagnosed with an incompetent cervix and, in particular, does anyone know how long (on average) it takes for you to go into labour once you've had the stitch taken out? I've been trying to find out from searching t'internet but haven't really been able to find out anything useful.

I would love hear from anyone whp has any information!

Hi
ive got an incompetent cervix too, i had my stitch out at 37 weeks and at 39 weeks i was 5-6cm dialated, but no labour! i could feel babys head for weeks lol
went into labour rather spontatously at 40 weeks and had a 2 hour labour. i now have a wonderful 10 week old
aparently some people go into labour straight away and some can even go overdue!

A friend of mine had a stitch at (I think) 13 weeks after her last pg had ended in late miscarriage. It was taken out at 37 weeks and she went into labour on her due date. 4 hours later her ds had arrived.
Good luck!

No personal experience but have read of others on MN with this. You may find some useful information in the archives.

Thanks to everyone who's replied - I guess there's just no way of knowing what will happen until I have the stitch out! Have been off work for 9 weeks now, and still have 7 weeks to go to dd so am feeling a bit impatient!

Hello Greggy

just saw your message - my email's not working today so thought I would post instead. You have already got through 8 weeks and all is ok- so take comfort from that. I'm sure that the more time that elapses from having the stitch put in, the less likely it is that you will have any problems (ie it sounds like the stitch has done its job and "stabilised" everything). Since I had my stitch put in at 23 weeks I have been told that I could have the baby at "any time" and it has obviously been worrying, but I'm now 35 weeks and am due to have my stitch taken out in two weeks. Time has gone by suprisingly quickly - and I haven't even been working. So take it easy, try not to worry too much and remember that once you reach 24 weeks the baby has a good fighting chance (especially if you've had your steroid injections) and then once you reach 28 weeks the statistics rise to (I think) 95% of babies surviving without any problems. You haven't got that long to go to 28 weeks, and after that you can relax a little more and just think of each day as a bonus. I'm sure you're having extra scans and check-ups, so you're in good hands.

Keep me updated!

Hi 510fudge. My mum had to had to have a stitch when she was pregnant with me - 30 years ago! Turned out she had a tilted womb. But she still went over due date, and had to be induced, as I was 2 wks late. Everything went fine. Apparently I've got a tilted womb too(it can be hereditary), but didn't need anything when I was pregnant with DS. Maybe have a chat with a sympathetic midwife. Take care, and please, try not to worry

Thanks for the messages - am scheduled to go and have the stitch removed next week so will keep you updated as to what happens. Baby is a healthy 6.5lbs already and I'm only 36 weeks so I really hope i don't go two weeks overdue!! Still, for the last 14 weeks I've been praying that the baby will stay inside me and it's nice finally to be in a position where I'm wanting it to make an appearance!

hiya all,
i know how stressful it is to have a stitch and to be wishing the weeks away instead of enjoying your pregnancy. when i got to 30 weeks i started to believe i may go to term, even though my consultant was supprised to see me at each visit! at 35 weeks i was estatic i'd made it so far and started planning my homebirth!!
28 weeks the statistics say 95% survival but its actually higher than that in most major hospitals in the uk so thats good news too.

good luck to you all
