Measuring fundal height, does anyone ever bother?

Pregnant with DC4, can't remember ever having been measured with DC3, but was with DTS.

In my maternity notes, for fundal height measurement, the midwives and consultant have simply written =dates, without even laying a finger on me. How on earth would I know if I'm growing properly? A couple of family members have made remarks that I'm not getting any bigger and now I am paranoid. I've hardly had any appointments at all, haven't seen a midwife for 10 weeks (am 31+4), I rang yesterday and they said 'we'll see you at 34 weeks'. I asked to see them this week as no-one has checked by BP, or anything! How would I know if they needed to do a growth scan? Apologies for long post. Just feel a bit snubbed and out of control. Sad

Midwife just wrote down cms today didn't use tape measure I'm 26 weeks and she put down 27, dnt think so had so many measurements last time around I'm shocked this time they just guess

I was measured yesterday at my 28 week appt-she did say though that it's a really inaccurate measure of growth so maybe they're phasing it out?

SandwichBag · 21/05/2014 13:11

I had my 24 week appointment yesterday (at 24+6) and they measured my bump at 23. All she said was 23 and wrote it down, didn't make a comment at all about it so assume its a ll normal. This is my 1st baby though, maybe they don't do it with subsequent babies?

WiggleGinger · 21/05/2014 13:11

My midwife measures my bump with a tape so yes! Although I take it with a tablespoon if salt as she measured me at 30 weeks, I was 25 and was sent for a growth scan. Baby was totally on size for 25wks!

SandwichBag · 21/05/2014 13:12

Sorry it was my 25 week appointment (not 24).

SouthDerbyshireMamma · 21/05/2014 14:20

Ive been measured at every appointmemt from 25 weeks.

thereisnoeleventeen · 21/05/2014 14:35

Is there a schedule of appointments in your notes folder? I had blood tests at 28 weeks, I thought they were standard?

I have been measured with the tape, apparently I measured big but the baby felt about the right size...so what it all means I'm not sure, other than I didn't want to measure so big that I needed a GD test.

I also had a bit of a worry as for a while I looked really much larger than I thought I should, apparently that happens with number 4+, your muscles are so relaxed that you look bigger and then after a while it all evens out. Perhaps that would explain why you don't appear to have gotten any bigger for a while.

TBH I would be pretty much insisting on an appointment if I hadn't been seen for 10 weeks.

Thanks so much for your replies! There isn't a schedule in my maternity notes for appointments but I have insisted that I'm seen this weekend as it seems far too long between appointments. I'm going to ask if they think the baby/bump is the right size.

Thank you!

I was only measured from 28 weeks, I'm sure at your next appointment they will measure if not ask!

squizita · 21/05/2014 17:11

I've heard it's only in any way accurate after 28 weeks, and even then can be very out.

Iwillorderthefood · 21/05/2014 17:14

Not been measured at all. I think you should have had a 28 week appt, then it's every 2weeks from 34 weeks.

Boogles91 · 21/05/2014 20:42

I would love not to see anybody for 10wks -.- im going back and forth to the hospital every two weeks and be there 3 days in a row sometimes, inbetween that is community midwife....also i have to see my urologist and have regular scans on my kidneys and bladder!
