4 weeks pregnant and worried - looking for reassurance!

Hi all

I'm a newbie and looking for some advice. I found out I was pregnant with our first baby on Sunday so very pleased! Since this morning I have had some lower stomach ache (I wouldn't say cramp as it's fairly mild) and went I went to the toilet and wiped myself I had a very tiny bit of brown discharge. As I work in a hospital I popped over and asked one of the midwives and she said it doesn't look good, it's not normal and to go home and put my feet up......I the asked the opinion of another midwife in the EPAU and she said something totally different. That it was probably implantation and to carry on doing what I was doing as life goes on. Still not happy I spoke to one of the o&g consultants who I have a lot of time for and he said the same, that it was probably fine and as it wasn't bright red discharge he wasn't overly concerned. I guess what I am asking is are there any ladies on here who have had the same and if so, how long does it last and is it fairly normal? I'm a born worrier anyway which doesn't help but it would be nice to know I'm not the only one who has suffered like this!!

Completely normal. I had it, thought it was the start of AF, but when she didn't arrive, I put it down to my irregular cycles and carried on as normal. Wasn't until id flown too and from prague 10 days later I did a test.

As long as the cramps are mild (insides stretch early) and there is no bright red blood, then you will be fine. As soon as I found out, I did stop all heavy lifting and overly vigorous activities, just as a precaution. I'm now 17w+4 and everything has been straightforward.

The bottom line, as you have found, is that no one can give you a definite answer and the only thing to do is wait and see (and try not to worry).

You will hear of many people with brown discharge early pregnancy who are fine.

You will hear of many women who bleed through vast chunks of their pregnancy yet are fine.

You will equally hear of many people who start with a brown discharge and the end result is a miscarriage.

You will hear of many people who have some brown discharge and nothing else until 12 weeks - then have a missed miscarriage.

There are lots of possibilities and so no one you spoke to is wrong. Neither are they guaranteed to be right. At this stage you can't really tell. You can speak to your GP though and see if you can be booked in for an early scan at 6 weeks.

In the mean-time please try not to worry. Everything may well be fine.

Wifflewaffle can't be beat spot on there!!! I've had spotting and heavish bleeds and been fine, I've had slight brown spotting for weeks (mmc) and slight spotting turning heavy (natural mc's).

Worrying won't do any good! Think positive and good luck!

MMC = Missed Miscarriage

Not wishing to worry you, this is why the baby stops growing at some point in early pregnancy but Mum-to-be's body does not recognise that the baby has died and so continues with the pregnancy and does not miscarry. Generally missed miscarriages are discovered at the 12 week scan.

Small amount of brown discharge at 4 weeks is very common, means nothing! :)

Sadly I have had both missed and obvious losses ... My most obvious brown discharge was this time (I am now 23 weeks) and sometimes had none with a loss.

I have a rare condition BTW just wanted to show how it really does mean nothing.

Seek medical help if the blood turns red or you get serious pain.

ERM but I would say "not normal" is wrong, factually. Implantation bleeding is known and mentioned in most books/pamphlets. It is well within the realms of normal.

I had an implantation bleed, I assumed it was the tail end of my period as I conceived a couple of days after it finished. All was absolutely fine for me, and I'm feeding my baby as I type. Congratulations!

I've just finished six days of light/dark brown spotting. Started last Friday, AF wasn't due till Tuesday so I POAS. A weeks worth of increasingly strong positives later, spotting stopped on Wednesday and I'm finally starting to think I might be pregnant!

Obviously, I'm not much help, as I don't know the outcome, but I'm convinced it was implantation/breakthrough bleeding and everything I've read says that in most cases, as long as it's not fresh blood, it's fine.

I had bleeding for about ten days at week 4ish. Now 26 weeks and everything's fine. I think you need to try to get on with life. You're not in control and what will be will be.

I had nine days of dark brown blood at around week four and it was quite heavy! I seriously thought it was a miscarriage! It was until a month later I had a proper missed period and did a test that I realised I was pregnant! You just never know. Everyone is different.
