34 weeks - WATERS BROKE - ok to be at work?

worried sick... my sister is having her first baby.... she is 34 weeks pregnant and her waters broke on Sunday. She went to hospital and they confirmed her waters had broken, stayed in one night then asked to go home. Found out that she went into WORK today. Isn't this risky??? I am worried about her, but she just says that the doctors told her she could and 'do you really think I would risk anything'.

Just worried about her, but cant seem to say the right thing... any advice... please!

When my waters broke at 34 weeks, i had to stay in hospital until my baby was born.

I was given antibiotics as a precaution, in case of infection.

I had to wait two and a half weeks until she was finally born, three and a half weeks early.

This was 5 years ago, so i don't know if things have changed.

She says she is going into work again tomorrow. I just don't understand why cos she doesn't need to. Are there any risks to this - its been a while since I had mine, but I was kept in after my waters broke and I was full term

I was told one of the risks was infection, hence the antibiotics straight away.

I also had to be monitered every day as well.

As the waters have already gone, you can go into labour at any time and hospital was the best place to be.

For the first week in hospital i wasn't meant to go away from my bed in case anything happened.

I was told to rest as much as possible.

Definately wouldn't have gone into work.

What area does she live in?

Just wondering in case it's near me as i'm sure the advice must still be the same.

When is she due to next see the midwife?

I'd be really surprised if a midwife/doctor had told her it was ok to go back to work if her waters had broken due to the risk of infection....not sure what to advise though.

heck no, i wouldn't go back to work! at her stage if she takes more than a week off work, it triggers maternity leave automatically, i believe. Better to be on mat leave than to lose a baby over something like this

tell her to call her midwife or the hospital on whether going back to work is safe.

To be honest not sure why being at work is a risk to the baby - however I do think it is a very strange thing to do. How much water is she losing? Is she on erythromicin which is an antibiotic which has been shown to delay preterm labour where waters have broken. Has she had steroids?

She's in Solihull - W Mids.

Thanks for your help. Just really worried - wanted to send my worries into the net cos can't sleep.

She was nearly hysterical on the phone tonight saying Mum had tried to make her feel guilty for going to work (I know that Mum hadn't said anything - that's not her style, although she is worried). Her Hubby is really frantic too - he wants her to rest up too.

Guess I might phone a midwife tomorrow for more advice... can't help worrying bout my sis and the babe

tot - it is up to your sister to contact the midwife TBH, not you. I know you are worried but it is her pregnancy and her decision. As I said earlier I do not think that being at work will put the baby at risk. It just seems strange to me that she wants to go.

What does she actually do?

Yes she has had steriods some time ago (she was having bleeds a month ago).

She won't have lost all her water or the hospital would want to deliver her baby. If she is no longer leaking water it may mean that the sac has resealed itself which is possible. New water is made by the body every day.

you are right - I know....

she's a marketing manager- as its coming up to the end of the month I guess she's worried about the teams targets

If you're still worried you could always call NHS DIRECT for advice or even the local labour ward could give you advice (just hope they're not too busy).

really - I never knew that. I heard that babies make new water, but that the sac can reseal itself.

She did loose a lot (I was there)!
