First scan on Wednesday , internal / external?!

I'm due to have my first scan Wednesday , my third. I'm nervous to wonder whether it will be internal or external ? Not 100% on dates so I think I'm 9weeks. Anyone got any experiences on a scan a 9 week scan?

They'll try external first iirc at 9 weeks.

I don't know why some women have internal scans. I had an early one due to potential complications, but they just did an external one and easily found a heartbeat at 6 weeks.

I've never had an internal scan but I just really wouldn't like one . Getting a bit anxious . Thanks bunbaker exactly what I think . I had a scan at 6weeks with my first and no internal needed :)

I think at 9 weeks it would depend on your own weight?
If you're quite slim I would say external, over weight internal.

I had internal at 6,7,8 weeks and external at 10 weeks. They might start external and move to internal if they can't get a clear picture.

I had one today at 7 weeks and found the heartbeat on external without too much of a problem

at 9 weeks i'd be virtually certain it'll be external.. i was 8+5..

i had an internal at 12 weeks just because my bladder wasnt full (make sure your bladder is full!!!!!!!!!0 and actually it wasnt that bad, not anything as painful as a cervical smear for eg..

they will try external first anyway- if they have no luck, they'll go inside"!

Lynnieboo · 19/05/2014 16:02

I had a scan at 9wksbat the epau and they did an internal.

I wouldn't worry about an internal one, it was pain free. so if you need an internal one trust me and the last person who commented that it isn't as bad as a smear. It doesn't bother me how they are scanning me once I see the little bean on the screen Wink

arghhelpme · 19/05/2014 16:16

I have had scans at 5,6 and 7 weeks with different pregnancies, they have all been external. The one and only time I have ever had an internal is to try and find out why I kept spotting for weeks on end (not pregnancy related) and even then they tried external first.

So going by that I would have thought they would always try external first.

Gingerandcocoa · 19/05/2014 18:36

I had an internal one at 8 and a half weeks. It was fine, didn't really hurt.

Please don't waste one single minute worrying about it :)

Gingerandcocoa · 19/05/2014 18:36

I'd say that if a smear test hurts about 8, on a scale from 1 to 10, then the internal scan would be a 2. It really doesn't hurt!

Poasaddict · 19/05/2014 21:12

Internal scans don't really hurt, so try not to worry too much, agree smear far worse. In the last 2 months I've had a lot of scans as had ivf. I have another on thurs at 6 +1 to hopefully see heartbeat, fx.

Poasaddict · 19/05/2014 21:13

Good luck for Wednesday btw :)

I had a number of internal scans last year. They really weren't painful and I found the embarrassment passed pretty quickly. Wearing a skirt helps. I was nervous before the first and found some info helpful. Link to thread here if you find it helpful to be prepared. It might just be external but really nothing to worry about. Hope all goes well.

alita7 · 19/05/2014 22:01

I had an internal at 6+ 5 as they couldn't really see anything and it turned out I have a retroverted (tilted backwards) uterus which was partly why.
I don't know which you'll have but an internal one isn't as bad as you think!

mssleepyhead · 19/05/2014 22:19

Had an internal at 7 weeks, no worries at all. They slip a wand (not big!) into a condom with plenty of lube and don't even look as they slip it in to you. I'm normally really awkward with such things but it was no worry at all, and they get a really clear image. Good luck!
