I'm overly nervous
It's my 12 week scan - opted for the combined screening
I have no idea what's going to happen or why they said to expect to be about an hour and a half
I don't even have any reason to worry I am just petrified something's gone wrong:( will the midwife say straight away if she sees a heartbeat ? Or is it an agonising wait while she does measurements etc?
Also do I need a full bladder ?? I

When you go, I would drink some water on the way in - there can be a wait and a too-full bladder is as bad as empty! They ask you to do a bit of wee which is tricky!

If you are nervous, tell the sonographer right away you'd like a HB confirmed. I did this (I have a history of MC) and they did so. After than they measure the baby and look for the nuchal fold behind the head, the nose bone etc' and they'll explain what these mean.
Quite a lot of time will be spent in a line for a nurse to take some blood.

Depending on the hospital, you either get the results that day, or get the scan explained but get your final results in the post. We got ours in the post, took about 10 days because we were low risk.

Most places you can also buy a photo.

The vast majority of these scans show a healthy foetus so try not to worry! :)

Hi Hun,

Congrats on your pg Grin

You do need a full bladder but don't need to be bursting Wink

When I had mine you could see baby wriggling about so I knew as soon as I saw her she was ok Smile

The sonogropher should explain a few thing to you, what part is what etc. if you are having the nt then thy will try and measure baby's neck, if they can't get it they may send you out for a bit then get you back in. You will also have bloods done Smile

Hope everything goes well for you x

The HB is usually done first but you may be able to see movement on the screen anyway (don't panic if not!). It's completely normal to have these fears - I was terrified, and even more so at my 20 week scan, in case something was picked up. But the likelihood is that all will be fine, so try to enjoy seeing your little one!

VJONES1985 · 18/05/2014 13:50

Oh yes, and the combined screening is a blood test plus the nuchal fold measurement, which is why it can take a while. Everything is measured in detail hence why they ask you to allow over an hour.

I wasn't there for very long at all when I went for my 12 week scan. They couldn't do the nuchal fold measurement for me as baby wasn't in a good position. The sonographer made me wiggle around to try to get baby to move, but it bounced around then settled into same position! So I was sent away and had to go back a few weeks later for blood tests to determine down's risk. I didn't have any bloods on the day.
Heart beat was first thing they confirmed.

Thankyou! I can't even explain why I'm so scared! Maybe the fear of the unknown or just me being paranoid. I'm hoping everything goes ok tomorrow and I'll get a full night sleep tonigt !
